Right...

this might be stupid but i've always wonderd..

ok this is mr a

ok

mr a has a good idea to build a new data centre in london he wants to know how much it'll cost to build though.

he wants to know what he needs he already has;
servers & racks
and he knows where to get backup from.

he wants to know where to get the 100mbps internet speeds.
or anyhting else..

how much do you think mr a should pay out to get a data centre built from scratch?

Building a datacenter will most likely cost you over 7k..

You have to factor in multiple lines for bandwidth, technicians, security, backup systems, and power-failure systems.

I'm sure someone else here could answer this more broadly then what I can, but off the top of my head thats what I know of.

yeah, my friend was talking to me saying that he wanted to build one..

mr a knows loads about this.. but not all of it

7k? Don't make me laugh, Add 2 zeros and you will have a very basic dc

Stan, I didn't say it would cost him exactly 7k, I meant it would cost over 7k, as in 7k+.

Course, the 7k was generally to what I listed.

Though, generally looking back, I recall one of Serverorigins data centers costs being about 34k. For equipment it looks like, not about space, or power limitations.

But adding those on, unless you built the building yourself, you're well over what Stan said, you'd have hit 100k for the building alone, if not more.

If mr.a can build a datacenter then mr.a should talk to consultant or technicians in the local area and not here.

Easily $700,000 and that may not even be enough.

$1 mil+ if you go the right route and get the ISO certifications, too.

Technically, 500$ one time and 50$/month would be enough. a cheap 490$ linux server and a 10$ second hand desk to put it on. 40$/month for internet connection and 10$/month to hire a spot in someone's garage.

You think this is a joke? The biggest company on the internet started this way ;)

yes, but nowadays people want a bit more:p

If your serious, start collocating its a nice midpoint - you have your own small segment of dc.

you could get a "BlackBox" by Sun. I guess you guys haven't seen it. it's a datcentre in a shipping container.

Man I've never seen that Sun DC in a Box! That thing is awesome!

Hmmm **Starts planning where I can fit one in my yard**

Not really, but that is a great concept... I could only imagine what a customers reaction would be if they knew the datacenter was in fact a shipping container ;)

The land required alone in London would cost "Mr A" over a million. And thats without all the building work needed, without the connection(s) and without the servers.

Building a datacenter in London would cost a MINIMUM of 1.5 mil. In GBP that is.

Good idea, Buy an peice of old farm land and make a datacenter of them. Interlink them all.... I wonder how much they cost.....

*Looks on there site and looks for old farmland near me....*

Now all I need now is money. Damn the only thing I don't have much of... I wonder if the accept IOU's

How much do those black boxes cost?

i'm surprised you guys have never heard of it.
you need to email them or phone them, and ask for a quote. they don't post it publically. i can't see them costing alot really. only the servers and such would set you back.

i'd love to own one though :D

I think you'll find the 34k was a monthly running cost not the total cost to build it.
So there's something to factor into any calculations, monthly costs.
