Car contains an odor I need to get rid of.

I've left the windows open for several hours today to no avail.

Ozium and other air fresheners do no help.

Will shampoo the carpets tomorrow and report back, but in the mean time ... any ideas?

in b4 "burn it"

Take two dinner plates, pile up coffee on each one. Close all the windows in your car and put one plate on the front seat and one on the back seat. Leave it alone for a day. The coffee grounds will absorb the smell in your car. Be careful not to spill them though, it makes a hell of a mess.

Do it the mythbusters way. You can remove that stench by covering it up by an equaly or greater horrifying smell!

Rather than masking the odour with scented air fresheners, you need to find the source of the smell. Shampooing the carpets and upholstery should do the trick. Spraying some febreze on wherever the smell is coming from (or everywhere for that matter) will probably help a lot. The shampoo/febreze combo has always worked for me.

good luck

That's what I figured would kill it ... the shampoo. If it doesn't I'll try Nick's coffee grounds idea.

Thanks everyone.

There's this spray that's sold in gas stations around me, works great. Can't remember what it's called though. It works by killing the smell, not masking it. I'll figure out what it's called and get back to you.

Simple baking soda would take a while, but it would do the trick too.

or IDEA IDEA

No smoking in it when you dont wanna be caught. Behind a dumpster behind the local school always works! lol

CS-Skylar: It's not about "getting caught." My dad doesn't care about stuff (http://people.ucsc.edu/~rplant/dank%20ganja.jpg) like some parents would (I've even brought him to a head shop downtown ...). I just prefer to not get a whiff of odor (http://people.ucsc.edu/~rplant/dank%20ganja.jpg) every time I get in my car.

jmiller: I'll keep that in mind too. That's what the mall I work at does with the dumpsters .... just throw mauled lemons and oranges everywhere.

Do the febreze idea as suggested... soak that stuff in there, but not enough that you'll have a different smell to work on. Also, my sister bought this HUGE air freshener from Wal-Mart... it's giant. Look for it in the car section, they also have some in the dog section... and I believe in the area with the stuff for your closet. It's huge though, you'll know it when you see it. Its a big circle. That thing is really over-powering.... so I hope you like the smell when you buy it, cuz it'll be in there for a while.

Has Seinfeld taught us nothing? The car is mother----ed and you are doomed forever.

Does that stuff actually work? I use Febreeeze, and sure it smells nice for a little while, that's about it.

You know, you can also use white vinegar in a bowl and place it on a seat for a full day. It will absorb the smell and will not stain like coffee if it spills.

Oust actually isn't too bad, but its just like the cheaper sister to Febreze. The smell won't last.

I have a friend who was in the car business, and they had a "fogger" that basically hotboxed the car with happiness. It worked like a charm for my car when it smelt like a well-aged foot.

Other than that, burn a few incense in the car [preferably, when you are not driving] and that will really help, on top of all the cleaning you are doing.

Thats my method. Works pretty good if you can't get your hands on a fogger.

Incense is even less effective than Oust. It smells nice while it's burning but fades quickly. I wouldn't recommend it at all as a deodorizer. Plus I thought he was trying to get the smokey scents out? ;)

If you can get your hands on some get Lemon juice (squeezy bottle is fine), Put a few drops all over the car this will 100% remove it as i have tried and tested this many a time when my gran is coming into my car lol.

Quite a pleasent smell and doesnt stain or fade the fabrics

you shouldn't fight the odor, you embrace, and become one with the smell.

Park the car downtown, open the windows, and throw the keys in the drivers seat.

Buy a cat - leave it in there for about 8 hours, guarenteed that smell will be replaced with another :)

Cigs weren't mine. Most of the weed wasn't even mine, just friends burning one while we rode from destination to destination.

you shouldn't fight the odor, you embrace, and become one with the smell. What an interesting philosophy

Park the car downtown, open the windows, and throw the keys in the drivers seat. With gas prices like they are, I might just do that.

I'd prefer cigarettes and weed.

And actually, weed is as weed does. It's faded into nonexistence. The cigarettes, however, still persist. I'll be able to shampoo the ---- out of my car tomorrow and let you guys know how it worked.

Just thought I'd mention, I remembered that Mythbusters figured out that Vodka is pretty good at getting the smell of cigarettes out of a jacket. In case you wanted to give that a real-world test if all else in this thread has failed you.
