Hey Guys,

We just started offering VPS hosting not to long ago and have been doing really well! We are using OpenVZ with HyperVM and so far everything has been great...

I am curious what other companies have had a better result with... OpenVZ or Xen?

I like the idea of Xen and how it does not allow you to overload the server. But OpenVZ is said to work better with HyperVM.

Is there any real difference in performance? All of our nodes have at least 1 quad core with 8 gigs of RAM, so have dual quads.

The way we have OpenVZ setup everyone gets a dedicated RAM and CPU amount and no burst. For instance, one of our plans is as follows:

50GB Disk Space
500GB BW
500MHz CPU
512MB RAM

It is working great and really cuts down on CPU hogs, but would Xen be better for this type of setup?

To be honest, I would ditch HyperVM and do it manually. Crissic is starting to offer VPS servers located in our Atjeu datacenter, and we installed Debian 64BIT and installed Xen, and then we are creating the servers manually. This way your control panel to setup VPS is non-existant and takes up no space or ram or CPU, and you have more control over it.

Unless you have a lot of CPU and a lot of RAM, I would say go with XEN, so your VPS clients can't overload the server.

We already have a couple nodes running OpenVZ and we are testing one with Xen... I honestly cannot tell a difference in the performance.

Our nodes are setup in a HyperVM cluster with the master on it's own box. So far it is working great.

I was just curious what type of setups other hosts prefer.

I love the idea of no overselling, but for some reason Xen doesn't seem as popular as OpenVZ... I have a good friend who has been in the business for quite a while and he gets an occasional Xen signup but most people choose OpenVZ.

I'm going to play around with a test Xen VM for a bit longer and just see if I can notice any performance difference

Skylar, thats all well and good, but we have to manage more than 15 nodes for VPS's. Having a control panel is a must, doing it manually would be impossible.

HyperVM is the best around for the price.
