cPanel VPS Optimized
-------------------------------

cPanel VPS Optimized is a new version of cPanel / WHM specifically designed to run on Virtual Private Servers. cPanel VPS Optimized provides the feature rich functionality of cPanel / WHM while reducing memory usage by up to 60% on VPS instances.

cPanel VPS Optimized represents a great step forward for cPanel customers. The reduction in memory usage for each install allows web hosts the ability to host more domains per virtual machine. This increase enables hosts to provide a more efficient and eco-friendly server base with fewer physical machines.

The upgrade to cPanel VPS optimized will require no interaction. Once cPanel VPS Optimized has reached the build tree on your server, automatic updates ( or manual) will upgrade the current cPanel / WHM installation to a cPanel VPS Optimized installation. cPanel VPS Optimized is currently only in EDGE builds.

Information about cPanel VPS optimized can be found at: http://www.cpanel.net/products/cpvps/

That is VERY nice. I am gonna give it a shot on a spare VPS I have and let you guys know tomorrow-ish how it runs!

WOOTS, that means my free host will be able to move to a not-so-expensive VPS soon ;)

Not being stupid but couldn't it be beneficial to basically anyone with a dedi/vps?

That's what I was thinking. Unless certain features are removed to optimise it?

I would imagine;

1) They optimize it to the specific technologie (EG: OpenVZ, Xen), so it would not work (or work as well) on a dedicated server.
2) They are going to work on licenses - The VPS license being the only one that can download/install this version.

looking forward to having a play around with this. Let me get this straight, when its a stable release, the next time the vps is updated, this will be installed?

Couldn't you just make the dedi into one big VPS and use the cPanel VPS on it?

That has its disadvantages as well as against cPanels terms. Using VPS software such as OpenVZ, and Xen, has its drawbacks, and if you have a dedicated server, its well worth shelling out the extra $15 per month to get the full license instead of doing it that way.

When you do the update as I did last night, it said "Running Platform Specific Optimizations". My guess is because they can tell which is a VPS and which isn't, when you do the update it pulls that information and grabs the correct files.

Once they put it into the stable release and if you have it automatically update, then it will do this yes.

So I installed it, and we have about 100 accounts on that server, we dropped almost 200MB ram on that VPS.

I just upped my personal cPanel VPS to EDGE to get the VPS optimized version... RAM usage dropped by 160MB

All I have to say is WOW!

This will definatally free up some ram on my VPS node once it is in release build so my clients don't use all of their ram :P

This is great, now I can afford to get a VPS and even get a smaller one cause it won't hog up all the resources. This will be perfect for my small upcoming project.

I don't think you should install this... yet

The named service doesn't work, nor does mail, or ftp on centos? Or it might be the way we installed it.

maybe it's best only to use it when it is available to buy on their website.
