Hey Guys,
I've been playing around with LxAdmin a bit lately and it has really grown on me! I am thinking of using it to offer a lower in price shared hosting division for those people who need quality hosting but don't particularly care what control panel they have to use.
I love how a complete LxAdmin system can run on about 15MB of RAM leaving TONS of RAM for customer's sites.
What do you guys think about offering LxAdmin shared hosting? Would it sell very well? Startup costs would be virtually nothing because I would be creating a Xen VM on one of our servers and using it to start.
Tell me what you think!

It would be unique, but your customers might shun you because there are loads of other providers with cPanel and powerful servers as well. You might want to try it out with a relatively cheap server first ;)
SC-Daniel
April 5th, 2008, 22:43
We already offer cPanel shared hosting as well... But as a lower priced option, possibly including a free base account, I am interested in how well it would go over!
Since we use HyperVM for our VPS management, LxAdmin is included. I am thinking about setting up a Xen VPS and using it to start.

Id give it a shot, ive never use it myself.
If the prices are ok, and it has atleast some good features, peopl emaybe interested. Tho i think youll find most ppl want cPanel.
Its worth a shot, since you mentioned the startup cost being cheap for you. You havnt got much to loose.

Thanks for the comments! +Rep for both of you ;)

I use LXAdmin for hosting as well on some plans and it actually went down really well with the customers... It uses about 20MB when idle on my 2GB server which used to use about 300-500MB with cPanel. It's also much easier on the CPU and great for proxy hosting ;)

April 6th, 2008, 04:28
Hey,
LXAdmin is good in the shared environment. Personally I don't like the interference of it. It does all the basics of cPanel and it allows you to offer hosting at a more reliable price because of less control panel costs & more RAM available to you.
SC-Daniel
April 6th, 2008, 05:13
Now I wonder if LxAdmin could possibly be skinned... Hmmmm
Thanks for the comments! I don't really have anything to lose, so I think I'll throw it on a Xen VM and do a call for testers to see how it really works out.
hamster
April 6th, 2008, 05:43
Shoot me a PM if you need testers ;) I wouldn't mind trying LxAdmin out :D

Will do! I want to do some experimentations and learn my way around some of the features I haven't touched yet, before I start going public with it.
Now off to continue the search for a way to skin it ;)
fnixws
April 6th, 2008, 07:32
Yeh, me2. Ill give it a beta test if you need. :P
SC-Daniel
April 6th, 2008, 07:37
What sort of disk space and other resources would be fair for a BETA?
I've never done BETA accounts before so I wasn't sure...
I am about to build a new VM on one of our servers to do the BETA accounts off of. Once I do that I am still looking into some skinning options.
Has anyone read anything about LxAdmin's clustering system? It seems completely awesome and I may end up giving it a go too ;)
hamster
April 6th, 2008, 07:55
Maybe a 100MB space and 1GB bandwidth for each account or smth? Make sure it's oversold because you can't possibly give non-oversold as it's a total hell waste of money.
SC-Daniel
April 6th, 2008, 08:40
Well looks like by the end of the day today I will be ready to do a BETA. Everything seems to be running great so far but I want to put it under some further tests before the actual release.
Currently the BETA accounts will have:
100MB Disk Space
1000MB Bandwidth
10 E-Mail
5 FTP
10 MySQL
The BETA period will probably be 30-45 days but may be extended if further testing is required. At the end of the BETA period I will have everyone that participated fill out a survey and give feedback on if it would be a good idea to offer this as a permanent service or not. Depending on the feedback I receive, all BETA testers will be allowed to continue to use their accounts at a heavily discounted rate.
I will post more details later this afternoon on how and where to signup. I would most likely limit the BETA to the first 10-15 signups.

Cheers Daniel :P
ye, somthing small is fine, just make some small packages with all features enabled. We can mess about for a while and report any problems.
Perhaps even make a quick forum to discuss it.
Who knows, if its a good system, perhaps ill look into it myself. I like to check out a bit of everything :D

Everything is ready to go... Except for some reason I cannot get the DNS server to be authoritative.
Off to do a bit more tweaking to see if I can get it.

This could be a great idea, but expect that most of people who will signup, will probably use there a account for making a proxy site.

Yeah, I thought about that... But the use of proxies on any of our servers is strictly prohibited by our Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy.
If I find out that someone is using the BETA account to run any form of a proxy their account will be disabled and they will have a nice little email in there inbox from us.

Hey Corazu,
I've only gotten two signups so far, so I have plenty of openings still left.
If you are interested just shoot us an email and I'll get you everything you need.

Heh, that was fast daniel... I'd have thought that you would take a few more days to come up with the beta lol... anyway, I've sent the email already and I'm waiting for a reply.
SC-Daniel
April 7th, 2008, 04:38
Yeah, I was going to give it a few days, but I've already been using LxAdmin for a couple personal sites and I know it pretty well.
Anyway, check your inbox ;)

Hmm... I don't have a spare domain lying around... I've never done this before, but is it possible to make a subdomain of one of my domains and edit the DNS zones of that subdomain to point at your nameservers using WHM?
SC-Daniel
April 7th, 2008, 05:37
absolutely... Signup with the subdomain you want to use and I will shoot an email your way with what you need to do to point it over.
hamster
April 7th, 2008, 05:51
I got it to work, but I had to create an account to create the subdomain because I couldn't find a way to create a subdomain on WHM and adding a subdomain in cPanel wouldn't show on WHM.
fnixws
April 7th, 2008, 06:25
I just grabbed a .co.cc
Thatll do for a beta test :D
SC-Daniel
April 7th, 2008, 06:34
Hey Hamster,
Hmmm you don't need to create an account to do it. Just edit the DNS zone and add an NS record for the nameservers in the welcome email.
Anyway... Fenix and Hamster, welcome emails should have gone out a bit ago, if you didn't get them let me know.

ya, its up and running.
sofar so good.
good alternative to cpanel... so far
SC-Daniel
April 7th, 2008, 07:36
That's awesome to hear! LxAdmin has come a long way and if they implement half of the things that they say they are going to, then it may end up surpassing cPanel in features.
If you have any questions or anything just pop a ticket in and I will look at it
SC-Daniel
April 7th, 2008, 07:52
Just FYI... The server the BETA accounts are on is using 22MB of RAM currently ;)
This is a HUGE improvement over cPanel, even with the new VPS optimized version.
hamster
April 7th, 2008, 10:18
Hmm... it looks quite neat from here. Almost like cPanel X with poor colors lol.
Lovin the UI so far :D
SC-Daniel
April 7th, 2008, 20:06
I am going to see if I can skin LxAdmin with a custom skin... That should take care of the bad UI colors.
As far as the BETA:
I am opening up more BETA slots as this machine is barely even using any RAM or anything. Running at 24MB as we speak ;)
If you are interested I have 12 slots left open. Please email beta[at]servercomplete[dot]com and request more information about the BETA.
Thanks for those who have already signed up!

Well, theres a bug in one of the automated emails.

Sorry about that! It was an error on my part. When I made up the welcome email I made a copy/paste error. I duplicated one of our cPanel welcome emails and then tweaked it to match the BETA details.
Fixed now and a new welcome mail should be coming out soon ;)

Have you tried the InstallAPP?
The LxAdmin InstallAPP (free btw) kicks Fantastico and Installatron to the curb in my book ;)z

lol I'm still waiting for my subdomain to propagate ;) I'll try the InstallAPP once it propagates fully ;)
fnixws
April 9th, 2008, 06:02
InstallAPP kicks --- man.
Tho theres a few things that fantastico has that it doesnt, but its got alot more to offer.
Unfortunatly, i notice some are "unavalible" and 1 of the ones i tested returned an SQL error when i tried to access the site after a sucessful installation.
I do have a mojor problem with Upload speeds to the server its on tho. I though at first it was my internet, but 3 days running, i cant seem to average more than 0.5kb/s. Suffised to say, its PAINFUL as hell to upload anything.
So I resorted to uploading it to my dedicated server, and sending it from there. Upload speed still sucked, but it was slightly better. Tho now im again uploading somthing.. slowly. If it times out, ill be pissed :(
Thats about it for now :D
SC-Daniel
April 9th, 2008, 06:04

That's strange! Must be an issue somewhere on the route between you and the server.
Did you try a tracert?

o.O I don't have any problems uploading ;) Maybe you should reset your router/modem?
fnixws
April 9th, 2008, 06:44
Well.. seems to not matter if i send from here (Australia) or my Dedicated server (US).
Uploading to the Dedicated server however i get full speed, average 30kb/s
Ill tracert.
SC-Daniel
April 9th, 2008, 06:55
That's strange! The test server is actually a VPS out of Databank in Dallas... I don't have the uplink or anything restricted so I am not sure why it would be slow to you from Australia and a server in the US.
I got 122KBPS and I am not on a very fast connection right now.
Shoot the tracert over to me in an email and I'll take a look. daniel[at]servercomplete[dot]com

0.8kb/s
Time remaining 17hrs36min :S
Well.. in the end after about 45 min, it decided to speed up.
Now im finding it impossible to login to MyBB that was installed by the install script.

I logged in no problem... I have noticed though, that on MyBB sometimes if you just hit enter to login it doesn't accept the password and I have to go back and relogin and actually hit the login button.
I am not sure about the speed issue to you... The tracert's make it look like something at Databank, but then I can upload at 120KBPS no problem.
Although I am being routed in with Global Crossing and I think it said you are coming in via Level3. I will check into this more and open a ticket with the DC to see if there are any issues with the L3 link.
