View Full Version : Creating a Backup Server

Hey, I'm thinking of buying a low-end Server specifically for remote backups for my clients. My only problem is, I have no clue what software I'd use to manage Disk quotas for my clients. I was thinking about just putting CPanel on the server, but I'd need more RAM, and it's not even a necessary expense, so I was wondering if there was software out there that was meant to do just what I need it to do, so I don't have to resort to a real control panel like CPanel, DirectAdmin, etc.

If all your users are using cPanel (assuming it is for your web hosting service), then you can indeed use cPanel or you can use rsync to move over the backups.

Well, I kind of wanted to steer away from CPanel, being that I'd have to pay $20 for the software license, and I'd have to possibly install more RAM on the server.

Yes, I've actually seen that before. =)
Does anyone have any cheap or free control panel recommendations just so I can manage the account quotas of my clients?

LxAdmin is VERY cheap to license. ServerCP isn't bad either...
There was a new fork of VHCS but I don't remember the name of it. I've used it before and it was quite awesome as well.
I remember you posting a wanted ad and I don't recall if I quoted you for a VPS or dedicated, but if you go with anyone who uses HyperVM for VPS Control, then LxAdmin is free. On a dedicated it's only $4-6

Okay, I'll check both of those out, Thanks Daniel. =) And yes, that was me, you quoted me for a VPS I believe.

I actually just had someone signup for a server through us out of the BurstNET datacenter and they planned on using it for backups.
The config they purchased was:
Intel P4 1.5GHz
1GB RAM
40GB + 1TB Hard Drive
10mbps unmetered BW
I believe they went with ServerCP as it was the cheapest to license for the control panel.
As far as I know they are happy with it.

Heh, I was actually going to go with a similar configuration. =)
Intel P4 1.5GHz
512MB RAM
40GB + 2x500GB Hard Drive
10mbps Unmetered BW

That's not a bad setup at all... Were you going to RAID 0 it?

The vhcs fork is here - http://www.isp-control.net/ - I installed for a client last week and it's actually pretty good imho.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll probably look into using this, it looks like it would help tremendously.
