View Full Version : Secret Santa

I know its kind of early but it would take some planning so I'm just throwing it out.
What if we do a secret santa with other fws members. The gifts can be virtual or you can send it to one another (of course youd have to pay for shipping)
I've seen this work on other forums and I got a few cool things from think geek:).
Anyone else think this could be a fun idea?

Ya seems like a fun idea...dont know how well it would work out tho

lol, nice idea... but i think it would be better if the gifts would only be virtual, because, what would i do if i(mexico) get to give something to XuserX(india)? The shipping would be more expensive than the gift xD
And also, like a type/cost limits? (less than, more than)

I was thinking virtual to.
When I did it on another forum I got a really nice forum skin. I gave a think geek gift certificate.
Of course it could be arranged that it would be within the country. (us people only will get us people. however i"m not crazy about people having my adress. Anyone else share that conern)

i've seen this thing going around youtube before.
a more logical idea would be some kind of book, send it to the next person, they leave a momentum inside. I seen that around YT before too :p
i agree with the address thing though.

The Idea is good, but in practice, i dont think it can work.
I mean, what can you possibly give someone electronically?
Send them an "E-Card", Give them some paypal cash? Buy them a WoW month or similar? Pay for their server for a month??
Most things that you could do like some of those above require more details about the person than most would be willing to give.

Well there are some things that you can give that does not require that much info...Perhaps a gift certificate for something like godaddy that you can email to them or something along those lines?

Make them a logo.
Give them free hosting if there a client of yours(reseller or what not)
give them your extra license you have sitting arround.
Give them a domain you bought but never developed
Give them your 3 letter aim username (I saw this happen on another secret santa)

Exactly, how many members and how many are active enough to be considered 'in' - and could you trust the buggers to cough up their prezzie :D
Certainly not in case of the above :P

I think its a good idea, but its kinda hard to regulate that. You could do it with people over X amount of posts, who have been registered prior to X date, or whatever. The thing you may run into though, is webhosts such as myself doing secret santa and giving some random person "X amount off a VPS with Crissic" type deal. There would have to be rules about no self-promotion, etc.

How about those above 600
(edit this is my 601st post how Ironic)

I think its a good idea, make sure to put a minimum/maximum price though and ask who wants to be involved.

I guess i gotta get posting then...
Thats a great idea Andy!
I agree w/ what Skylar said. If you wanted to have virtual products included in this, it would have to be an all or nothing sort of deal... there shouldnt be $5 off or 50% off for life or anything like that...
Also each participant should specify what they are bringing to the table and what is going to happen along those lines...
however this is months away and this idea probably hasn't even been passed yet.
side note: Has anyone ever heard of a Yankee Swap? That might be kind of fun, and it would be a little bit easier than a Secret Santa, but it would be alot harder to figure out who draws what product first.
Anyways, good luck guys, if this is successfull, this is probably going to take a month or two in advance to get everything set up and ready 2 go

White elephant gift exchange (also called Yankee Swap, Thieving Secret Santa, Nasty Christmas, Dirty Santa, Scrooge's Christmas, Chinese Gift Exchange, Chinese auction, or Thieving Elves) is a popular party game usually played during the Christmas season in the United States and Canada. The premise of the game is that each guest contributes one gift to the game, and ultimately each guest walks away with one different gift from the game. The type of gift is sometimes decided ahead of time (e.g., "something less than $10," "a used item from home," "a gag gift," etc.).
sounds fun, but the slang names don't sound too appealing :p

Yea lol. I remember in 3rd grade we did a yankee swap. There were 20 kids in my class, and when I drew out a number I was #20.
It would be hard to draw from all of the people included in this contest, and the list of all of the virtual products would have to be approved ahead of time... same goes for the Secret Santa
.Andy
May 24th, 2008, 17:23
Yankey swap if it was all virtual could be fun :) Anycoders want to volunteer to make a system. I'd host it
TornadoGaming
May 24th, 2008, 17:42
yea, i was thinking that would be better. If everything was virtual, that would be sweet! We would need a fair and balanced "drawer" so that there isn't a conspiracy going on here and so someobody picks themselves or a friend to be the last person to choose.
The reason i thought this might be cool is if you don't want to draw, you could use your post count to draw.
I know alot of you have been saying that the most active members should be involved...
why not have the lower post members who want to be involved pick first... and then the regulars who post daily (and who have like +1,000 posts) pick towards the end
just a thought
.Andy
May 24th, 2008, 18:20
Just a thought. It would be nice if someone wanted to donate alittle lottery script to pick who gets who and "randomly" email the users the details.
Dynash
May 24th, 2008, 18:33
That can be done easily inside JS, You click a button, it selects a number randomly.
TornadoGaming
May 24th, 2008, 19:06
I found a site that does this, but a JS program might be better
Draft Order Generator (http://tools.fantasysportsfactory.com/DraftOrderGenerator/random.php)
Its a fantasy sports site, but you enter in the # of people, and it randomly picks who goes first, 2nd, etc.

Why not 200-300 and registerd before when
OR
600
That way people like myself can still be in it :)

Why not everyone who will declare over £100,000 income personally this year and is prepared to donate a 'worth' £10 gift.
Jeezus - it's a nice thought but an impossible one - imagine posts in the new required forum in January & February 2009, possibly much longer and the legal battles.
"My ZZll! didn't work - it needs me to buy $8,000 worth of software!"
"Yeh, she didn't appear when she said she would!"
"&^*% - It's taken me 2 months to get back online after my present"

it's not spam, I really do want a pony... and I'm not even sure if posts here count towards your total... if I was going to make truly empty posts anywhere, it'd be the offers section asking hosts stupid questions about negative reviews, uptime, a business license, and why they don't offer 90 day returns.

Hahaha.. Too funny
Well, not so sure whats included with TTR but is there a Special Section with tips/tutorials, or whatever similar to WHT's Premium Membership area? (not content wise, just using as a comparison). If there isn't, that's always a suggestion.
Hah, WHT's Premium section is kinda like the LTW :D
