Just wanted to announce to anyone using swift and that doesn't keep up with announcements that Swift File Hosting is currently closing it's doors.
All accounts and data must be backed up before the date of June 21st, 2008
Also wanted to say that you guys were right about bedroom hosts. Tried to prove you wrong but too many things have happened. I just don't have the time to keep it running. This was not due to a monetary issue, it's just difficult. An experience I would recommend anyone to try however.
I've done a lot of "maturing" since the opening of this business and learned a lot as well: People, coding, idiots, abuse. Anyway, also want to do a public apology to anyone I might have angered when I went on my little rants about the bedroom hosts.
Yes, some do have the potential to succeed but it takes the will power of that person to get it that high. There's just... To many weeds to see those people. Good luck being heard...

What a shame.
At least you learnt some stuff on the way.
IMO theres no need to apologise. Everyone has an opinion, right or wrong, its just good to see your man enough to admit you may have been wrong.
GL for the next venture :D

Lack of success? Any service can become successful, you just need to know which direction to take. You need to have the funds ready, starting a new service will take its toll on your funds, so starting a service with just $20 to buy a domain and reseller means you're going to be stressing for months on end to be able to get the money to pay for your reseller, until your service becomes popular. It takes time and the know-how of where to go. Just research, you know how most Web hosts work and how they're going wrong, so do something different to that to stand out from the rest.

At least he has the balls to tell everyone he is closing his doors instead of just flipping the power off on his servers and leaving all his users with no clue of whats going on.

sorry to hear that your shutting down your file hosting service. If theres anything you need help with just ask, and if you still have extra time on your hands my forums need some helping :D
But yeah dont' listen to phprock, your one of the few who would alert their members that they are indeed shutting down instead of ditching.

You run servers from your bedroom/house. Not inside a DC.

Something I can relate to, unfortunately. :tired2:

How come your closing it instead of selling it? :S

Yea you should've sold it... make some quick cash since you can't maintain it :P

Since it's file hosting would it be viable to sell? Maybe the domain name and site/scripts only.

Domain + Script + Files + User-Database + Traffic = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

One of the closure reasons on the site is abuse (file hosting = abuse) so you might want to leave the user database out of the equation :wink2:

ROFL I couldn't sell it if I wanted to...
80% of the users abuse the service, the 20% that don't just use it as a warehouse.
The script is freeware with a custom scripted theme. Any Yoo-Who can download and mimic you (The reason you see so many new hosts based of the uploader script).
The actual software does not support download tickets nor does it have a payment system.
I actually did get a support system installed and integrated and was working on a billing system that would unfortunately be manual until I read up on ways of scripting php.
I hired a coder on these forums that disappeared forever ROFL and so yea just haven't had the best of luck. (I used to use MFH Script and It's a piece of junk. I've never had more problems with ANYTHING before in my life. But yea got a theme scripted for that as well.)
I am planning on passing ownership to J J on the forums however. Maybe he can have more luck ROFL but it honestly isn't worth anything. Just a project I thought would be interesting to do. (And it got me into my new job position)

At least you can laugh about it. That's the problem with the internet these days, no one is ever getting rewarded for offering something for free, instead they just get abused until they have to close. Personally, I can't wait to see a change in the way free hosts get used and abused.
Perhaps you should remove the link in your sig? ;)
If J J loses interest in taking it over, do let me know - I would be happy to add it to my collection of sites, and even pay you a little for it. :)
