I just read this article at bruce's site:

It's interesting how Microsoft is so aggressive over the term "windows" :p

Yeah... I personally think it was a really really stupid idea to call it Lindows. I mean... get real.
I don't think Microsoft should demand they be shut down... just change their name and stuff.

I've always said that if MS made a Linux version, they could call it WinLin. Or Lindows. I think Lindows should change it's name to WinLin. or LinWin. lol.

Listen to what you just said...How can you make a Linux version of an OS...Linux is an OS...you dont run OSes on OSes, so windows cant be a linux version or it'll be a windows version because its an OS in place of Linux which cant support a whole nother OS by an OS!

And besides, I think I'm not the only person who assumed Robert meant, if Windows were to create its own flavor of Linux. Or, in other words, if Windows were to create its own Linux-based OS. There are several different flavors of Linux. Each is a slightly different OS; some are very different from others. If you ask for a Linux install on your server, you will most likely get RedHat just because that's the most popular. However, you could get Mandrake or Debian because those are other popular Linux distros/flavors.

I think Bill Gates likes to spend all his time taking people to court because he has enough money to. He just likes to look big so that nobody can piss him off. In my opinion this is stupid and microsoft should have copyrighted the word lindows if they cared so much about it.

Part of owning a trademark is that you must defend it's usage in order to hold it. If you don't defend it's usage and it becomes a common word then you may loose the registered status at the USPTO: http://www.uspto.gov
Microsoft in a way had to bring the trademark case eventually. Even though they had to, I think it did them more harm then good. It gave Lindows a lot of publicity and as a result Lindows is starting to become a more common name.
I'm anxious to see if Lindows improves on their betas. It's had mixed reviews but if it handled Windows applications in *nix better then say WINE it has a lot of potential. I do dislike that it has to be run as root though; it sort of defeats the purpose of using a more secure OS.

I didnt mean create a windows version of linux, I meant if Microsoft created their own Linux OS (that would allow all MS products to be ran on it), they could call it Winlin. Windows programs running on Linux.
