Right well,
Im trying to connect my laptop wirelessly by a router/wi-fi but when i try to connect it says please enter user & pass so i phoned up virginmedia to see if they have a user & pass for me but they don't because cable is a constant internet connect.
So i said to them if they would know how to setup my wi-fi to my router/modem and their response was "We arn't train to do this." which is typical of richard branson :ninja:. Now i am able to connect this computer (desktop) via my router into the modem (loads faster then it would through modem :devious2:).
Sadly i can't figure out a way to get my laptop to connect wirelessly.
Virginmedia also said to phone up sitecom (router manufacture) for my password/user but they wouldn't know surely? Because all they do is supply the router not the internet.
So i was wondering if anyone may have any idea on what to do or anything?
Only thing i could think of is a access point(er)?
Thanks

Look n the router manual for the IP of the router.
with your hard wired PC, browse to the ip address of the router eg: http://192.168.0.1/ or http://10.0.0.138/
If it asks you for a password you dont know, check your manual for the default password.
If its a second hand router, see if it has a reset switch on it and press and hold the switch for 10 sec.
Restart router and try again.
Once you get to the routers page, you can configure all the wifi settings, including the WiFi password settings.

Yeah my ip address for my router is http://192.168.0.1/ but can only access it through my desktop not my laptop. I logged my routers page but theres no setting for wi-fi.
And if i connect my laptop to my router via ethernet it still doesn't work for some reason. But i'd rather connect wirelessly then wired.
Thanks

Yep its definetly a wi-fi router.
Model number: WL-154 Link (http://www.sitecom.com/product.php?productname=Wireless+Network+Modem+Router+Mimo-XR&productcode=WL-154&productid=541&subgroupid=43)
I may take it back and get a different one or get a refund and buy one somewhere else. Im not sure what to do.

ok, so login to the router
Click interface setup
Click Wireless

BTW, the default username and password are admin/admin
IF you do take it back, get a linksys WRT-54G (and make sure its a version 4 or below if you want to mod it) Hell of a good out of the box router.

Do you have a link to where i can find a linksys WRT-54G? I looked on google but could only find "how to hack WRT-54G" :eek3:
Thanks

Go to desktop computer, open router config page (defaults are admin and admin for user and pass), second tab is interface setup, click it, then click wireless on the line below it and you should have your wireless setup page.
Ensure 'Access Point' is 'Activated' and check Authentication type and Encryption and the password is the 'Pre-Shared Key' value.

Made sure it's not your laptop? How old is it? I'm assuming it has a built in Wifi card, best to make sure it's that, that's holding you from connecting.

The laptops asking for a password so it's more likely the WPA-PSK key it's asking for so it is connecting but not authenticating :)

Its like a dial up kind of thing where it asks for user & pass click for image (http://support.easystreet.com/dialup/local/winxp/dialup-connect.jpg) like that but instead of dial up its broadband which i dont get because with Virginmedia you dont get no user/pass unlike your with non-cable.

When I got mine, I never had to do anything. It just connected automatically, I then went into http://192.168.1.2 and added a WPA password, it never had anything pre-configured on it password wise. First time I've ever heard that.

:knockedou In IE - Tools - Internet Options - Connections. Click 'Never dial a connection' , bet it's on 'Always dial my default connection'.
New laptop = default settings!

I had the same problem when I hooked up wireless. I ended up hating it and went ethernet, but if I would have been able to see this thread I could have told you that :( Missed it by that much :(
