it looks like they are providing free domains or is there some hidden cost

if you consider the transfer fee of $50 (or upgrade services for $24.95 then transfer for "free") nothing, then yeah, the domain IS free, and there are no hidden costs.
Note, I said no hidden "costs". Which means you don't pay a dime.
BUT!... in return... you get a horrible, ugly adframe begging you to upgrade their plus services, AND you don't "own" the domain unless you tranfer it.
My domain, below, I got it for free from them, but now I regret it.

I agree with LeX ... I also regret signing up with NameZero. Becuase I registered a .NET with them and about 2 to 3 months later I bought the real domain which is a .COM and they bought the .ORG version fo my domain ... so they will buy out the domains to lock them out. Crooks I tell yea!
If your making a personal website and don't care about look and things about the ad frame. Then got for it but it's a major waste of a domain.

Yeah, I also have thrown away my domain name. I used emeisp.com. At least they don't put an ad frame, but now I don't own the domain, and transfer fees are about $65 . So, if it's just a personal site, go for it. But if you plan on DOING something with your domain, pay the $10 a year for it. It's woth it!

It is actually worth to think: do I really need a domain name. If you want to add your own banner and your webspace provider adds one and then for example the namezero frame...Not much space left for content actually. I think
that it's ok to start something like ???----------, at least they don't have ads. If my websites turns out to be successful I can always buy a real domain. On the other hand domain gives your site a more professional look and can turn in more visitors... Who knows.
Can you Canuckkev say anything about emeisp.com? What kind of ads and where did they use? Was it completely free? Can I use my own ads?

I have heard (I think that on these forums somewhere on this site some)that namedemo needs you to be US or Canadian citizen. You need to go and register in their office or sth. Don't know for sure. There is also Namedemo.com, also free and I think that without such restrictions but walso with huge adframe like namezero.

I don't think they really care wether or not you're in the US or Canada, worked fine for me. :)
emeisp.com has a exit pop-up, meaning that they don't do anything to your site, only pops up an ad once a visitor leaves or closes the window.

>emeisp.com has a exit pop-up, meaning that they don't do >anything to your site, only pops up an ad once a visitor >leaves or closes the window.
Seems not to be very bad...

but you don't "own" the domain!! IMO, that's VERY bad.....

Exactly. I thought it sounded a lot better than namedemo or namezero, because this exit pop up is only visible once a user leaves your site. But now I don't own the domain. That IS very bad.

But can I buy my domain from free domain providers later? Will they sell it to me?

From emeisp.com's FAQ's
If I want to leave your services at a later date, and take the Domain Name with me, what are the charges involved?
We will charge a US$50 Administration and Handling Fee, aswell as the pro-rata cost of the unexpired portion of the Domain Name (at US$35 per year).
ie For a Domain Name which has 6 months before expiry, the total charge is = 50 + (35x6/12) = US$67.50
Why is there such a high Administration Charge to transfer the Domain Name ?
The Administration and Handling charge of US$50 is not high compared to many ISPs which provide a Free Domain Name provided you pay for their Hosting services (many range from US$100 to US$200). Our company is also not setup to receive money this way as part of our everyday business, thus our costs involved in receiving money is that much higher. In fact we aim not to take a single penny from our customers.
Also as you maybe aware that because we provide our Domain Names completely free, it would be very open to abuse if we did not charge a reasonable amount to prevent this abuse from happening.
Many sites register domain names for $10 or less per year.

But wait...I found more in the FAQ's
Is it possible to lose the Domain Name after I have got one ?
When we purchase the domain name for your exclusive use, we register for it on an annual basis, as with normal Domain Name Registration. We will continue to renew the Domain Name annually provided your website is still eligible, ie, still Active.
If however we determine that your site is not 'Active', we will ofcourse inform you that we will not be renewing the domain name for you for FREE. In which case we will offer you 2 options. Transfer the domain to you, via an ISP of your choosing. Our Administration costs to you will ofcourse be FREE, which means you will most likely just pay the $35 for the Domain Name renewal with your ISP.
So, if I understand correct, it is free to transfer the domain to you for free, but only at 1 year intervals.

that's much better then namezero cuz they keep your domain forever and you gotta pay high prices if you want it back.....

10$? There's ones for cheaper than that. Powerpie.com sells 'em for $8.88. And another, can't think of it, sells 'em for $7.50.

-TJ Since the deregulation of the selling of domains, Internic has lost its monopoly over the domain name service. This created a huge market with tons of competition, lowering prices to about the $10 mark. http://www.joker.com is a well known and established domain registrar that many people use. The last time I checked, I believe they sold domains for $11. And yes, all of this includes internet fees.

Yes, before they were the only registrar, now they just collect $6/domain from every registrar. *sigh*

Where have you been for the past few years?? A few years ago, you started hearing "great baragain, CHEAP domains for only $2x.xx a year!!", and now it's "get your .COM for ONLY $1x.xx!!" (I'm talking about ads)
