How does this sound for a server

950mhz AMD Athlon
512mb of ddr 2100 ram
233mhz bus speed
And the rest of the basics

How would this do for a small host?

Moonman
March 23rd, 2002, 03:24

March 23rd, 2002, 03:27
I forgot to add that it isn't a Rack server, I really wanted a 1U but I ended up with a desktop style, It works though,

What "os" do you reccomend I install...I have not done much with Linux but I can learn what do you reccomend

Moonman
March 23rd, 2002, 03:30
I would go with a linux, probably redhat.
and as i am making suggestions i want free hosting :p

guitarnerd
March 23rd, 2002, 03:32
Oh yeah, it has at least 40gigs but I am getting it for free, it might be 60gigs. Long story, but I am getting it for free.

well as you have seen a heap of people here are NLC's, which means they like hearing long storys, so go ahead.

My Dad was a bidder or something for a construction company in LA and yesterday he quit to go to some other construction company and he also did a lot of work on the computers, his new job is going to supply his computer so he has a very nice computer lying in his office, without a home with a nice 17" monitor $80 mouse and Natural (split) keyboard (my preference.) I think I might put a Athlon XP 1900+ in it considering I was ready to spend $300 for a server now I have extra money. The funny thing is, is that I just so happened to come visit him the weekend this all happened, and told him how I was going to put a host together and needed a server. So things worked out pretty nifty.

guitarnerd
March 23rd, 2002, 03:46
I meant to put "I was ready to spend $500", I was saving up for a 1U barebones from tiget direct

Can i get free hosting off you, please.

is0lized
March 23rd, 2002, 03:55

guitarnerd
March 23rd, 2002, 03:55

Well, I will either run it out of my house on 1.5mbps DSL or host it from a place that has dual satelite connection, which is basically T3, but Im not sure how I would set up my Ip address with them

cool free hosting for $5 a month running of home DSL. :p

guitarnerd
March 23rd, 2002, 04:08
Yes, I will be offering free services, but it would be like 10mb space 200mb of transfer. I will do a few paid hosting accounts for about $5-$10 a month with something like

250mb space
5gig transfer
most scripts
and a bunch of other stuff the usual I guess.

For an OS I would reccommend Slackware or FreeBsd. Then RedHat.

Slackware and FreeBsd are a little harder to install, but if you are planning on hosting, then they are worth it in terms of security.

guitarnerd
March 23rd, 2002, 04:24
I think I might just use red hat, it seems to be common and the simpilist way to go, but give me more info on it

Bruce

You've got to be kidding me.

You actually think people will pay you for hosting out of your own home?

ROTFLMAO

And even if you did use a satelite connection, don't. Uploading would take ages and the pings would be horrible.

Dual Satellites connection are NOT T3. And 1.5mbps DSL is crap. IF you want to offer paid hosting, you need at least Dual T3. and very cheap prices(cheaper than Myacen). Trust me, people wont pay for slow hosting.

Myacen is getting slower .... so maybe they do :confused2

Also ....

Host Once is slow as ---- .... and people fall for it every time :biggrin2:

It depends, there are two methods of uploading on satellite, through a phone line which will give whatever modem speed you have... or you can get a transmitter which will transmit your uploads back across the satellite system... only problem is it depends on the weather as to whether it is any fast or not!

Also, you can get kicked for hosting on your home DSL if the ISP prohibits such a deed.

Myacen has been having problems with their servers and are keep going down. ATM they are looking for a new NOC.

March 23rd, 2002, 21:07
you should go with some sort of BSD flavor, or slackware or debian *NIX. redhat is to vunerable.

What control panel software are you planning/are to run?

CPanel, Plesk, Ensim, other? :)

ATM they are looking for a new NOC. Data Center, actually. NOC (Network Operations Center) is where the servers are monitored from.

The data center is where the servers are actually located.

Well 1.5mbs DSL is basically a T1 service, it not good for a host(needs ocx-3) but more than enough for your own website.

Bruce
March 23rd, 2002, 23:17
You have to realize that the 1.5 mbps speed is only the downstream though. With DSL you normaly wouldn't get anything more than a 256k upstream.

niv
March 23rd, 2002, 23:18
No, it's not the same, for ADSL upload speeds are set, unlike a T1, where it's whatever's available:

ADSL~Verizon/many providers:
1536 [or less] kbps down/128 kbps up

T1:
Up to (usually):

1536 kbps down and 0 kbps up
or

0 kbps down and 1536 kbps up

The weather can also affect ADSL users.

March 23rd, 2002, 23:20
I am getting confused...

(a) Are we talking about hosting a site on a T1?
(b) Where is this T1? Data Center? Someone's spare room?

Thanks :D

Bruce
March 23rd, 2002, 23:22
There is no T1. We're talking about someone offering hosting with their DSL line out of their own home.

ahh okay.

LMAO

It's not just the T1 you have to take into consideration when trying to host a site. There are MANY other factors

Server Monitoring
Fire Suspension
UPS backups
Redundant Connections
Tier 1 or Tier 3 bandwidth
Level of training support personal/network engineers have
Climate control

... just to name a few :D

I guess it would be okay for a small, non critical personal homepage.

Bruce
March 23rd, 2002, 23:28
Can't forget climate control. It's a must to maintain the servers at a constant temperature.

I don't know how I missed that one. That's like one of the most important! :D

There are some hosts out there with worse colo conditions that that.

check out www.martnet.com and the Ghetto co-lo deal.

The satelite here is very fast, it is a local company that owns it and it runs through local antennas connected to a backbone, the upload speed is around 2mb-65mb a sec big gap, but it is usually very fast. I am paying for the DSL line specifically for the host.

i have 4 computers networked and running off a cable connection one is running apache on xp (and that will change once i become more knowledgable with linux) do I qualify as a datacenter????....lol....btw its in my bedroom so i keep it nice and cool and for redundancy i have a dial up connection...it's a spare as well as free

guitarnerd
March 24th, 2002, 02:04
I am not trying to have some proffessional company here. I just want to host a few sites locally, just bloggers and such. I am not going to really charge for it. I will offer a few free accounts.

guitarnerd
March 24th, 2002, 02:06
and as I said but you seem to keep ignoring the fact that if I do host I will take my server to a data center

March 24th, 2002, 02:11

March 24th, 2002, 02:15
I wasn't talking to you michael but everyone who thinks its a crack up that I am trying to run a host from my house. They keep not reading the fact that it isn't for the public but for some friends

Hey like i said I run apache on xp and I also have an ftp server running for now and I dont even bother offering anyone anything free cuz all they do is ----- about someone offering them something free...and I dont mean everyone but there are ppl on this forum that would ----- if u hung them with a new rope... Its been stable been up for every hour the past 2 weeks or so I have kept it up 24 hrs a day except for one reboot to clean up the ram.

March 24th, 2002, 02:24
