Portland is not always slow, can be very fast at times, but it's far too variable. That seems to be the complaint against it, and I'm with that.

I don't think it is bandwidth, I think it's cpu power as the ftp responds faster.

Portland has a very tight limit of data transfer a month. 100MB per month, I believe. 100MB will not be enough if you have lots of people downloading.

I'll take my donwloads on other Servers like Virtualavenue or Tripod.
Is there any similar provider ?

100mb a Month is not much at all.

However I've found you can go over this without getting locked, but if you start exceeding 250mb/month portland will lock your site!

Usually around the 15-20 of each month Portland starts to speed up. Guess people are reaching their 100mb limit by then (Oh well you get that).

Portland is a good provider. The only thing that prevents new customers coming on board is their crappy 100mb bandwidth limit. Though their is away around it. I think I read it on some forums that they have. Don't know if it works though.

For every 1kb you upload to your site, 1kb is added to the monthly bandwidth limit. For example

100,000kb

You upload a 30k file.

100,030kb in bandwidth now available.

Maybe if you try driving backwards it will refill your gas tank, too.

What about f2s or datablocks speed?

F2S has decent speed..... but I've heard bad things about Datablocks.

Portland - I always can download at decent speeds, and access the ftp at decent speeds, but sometimes accessing webpages on portland is slow - latency!

Guess you can have all the bandwidth in the world, but if the server hasn't got the cpu power..

They have a lot of sites on there, but only one server - all sites capable of running cgi scripts.

Laurie, not everyone has a fast connection. Unfortunitely 56k is [believe it or not] still the standard. On my 56k, portland sites are PAINFULLY slow.

High speed connections are not available everywhere. Although they are available here. Coverage of cable is little, and with DSL, it's even worse.

my modem claims to be capable of reaching speeds faster than a 56K. yeah right...

I don't think anybody offers high speed connections around my area... if anybody does, it might be too expensive or something.... *shrugs*

cable is nightmare here, I could do better with a 14.4K on my 486!

In my area, DSL will cost you $130/mo. and T1 is $450/mo. That is a RIPOFF if you ask me, plus installation is expensive as hell. Satellite is available but $20/mo. plus you have to have an ISP to upload another $20/mo. If I can only download at high speeds, it's not worth it IMO.

Oh well, six more months and we get digital cable. Maybe I'll upgrade then :p.

I used to get 500kb/sec all the time with my cable modem in Ohio, but they've limited us now and I can only get about 150kb/sec :(.
