The overall theme of the layout is nicely put and thought about.
The colour scheme though, I think, is not. It's too much solid greys and reds, to bland. Play about with web2.0 graidents and some gloss.

I think the reds have to go, they're too bright in comparison to the rest of the site. Also make that black box a little lighter.

I disagree.

He could keep the reds but lower them in contrast to the rest of the site, so it doesn't seem off balance to the rest.

Try toning them down a bit, see how that works.
