Why don't you try working through a third-party payment processor to access CC cards. When you have no US physical presence, this can be not only a more convenient option, but a whole lot more legal than having someone sign up for a merchant account as your proxy.

A few providers worthy of exploration are:
iBill.com
2CheckOut.com
Revecom.com
Jettis.com/JetBill.com

I personally use a combo of PayPal and 2CheckOut, and have been more than satisfied with both. 2CheckOut takes care of all the admin - including removal of fraudulent orders, chargebacks, billing dispute resolution, provision of a secure server, etc, and simply mails checks for the amounts collected (minus their relatively modest commission) on a fortnightly basis.

We have had success with http://www.paysystems.com.

do they all accept debit cards? I have a debit Visa and it's been denied at several places using one of these services (not necessarily one of these, but one of this type). Might be important...

2CheckOut does, as does ClickBank, which is a similar service that I also investigated in-depth, but forgot to mention in the post above.

The thing to check here is to ensure that the service processes not only Visa, Mastercard, etc, but "their variants" in addition. Most debit cards conform to the same structure as credit cards, but some are governed by different billing practices and such. Nevertheless, if the service claims to charge, for example "Visa cards and all their variants", this should suggest that they can process most derivitive card types.

In addition, if you are planning to sell a product in which you will ship and are looking for a hosted solution, you need find a company that will support this.

Services such as ClickBank prohibits the sales of tangible goods.
