Hi Guys,

From what I have seen in the hosting industry, people have incredibly mixed opinions on automated signups. Many smaller hosting companies disable automatic activation to prevent spammers from accessing their service, whilst others allow it as this system can be convenient for both staff and customers.

Currently I manually activate all of my accounts after checking the domain and information provided as a precaution. Would anyone else advise that I switch over to using automated activation, and would you advise that I purchase any services such as MaxMind to automatically check signups?

Thanks!

Using Maxmind you can do that.. but why go through the trouble when you can manually look at each application and approve or decline?

I use iPanel and manually check each application and hit approve..

Why go thru the trouble? Maxmind is a heck of alot faster then manualy doing it. Its saves alot of time and staff like me can focus on monitoring exisisting accounts and dealing with spam.

With manula activation the clients have delays. Assuming some of them will not be happy with waiting. Better to check this afterward to have more time for the each customer to review them

In a previous thread here on FWS, myself and Tracker actually got around MaxMind quite easily when testing my own system... Never trust it as your only fraud verification process.

I personally would never offer automated setups for the simple fact that I am really careful and paranoid about fraudulent orders.

Just take a few minutes here and there to review everything and make sure it all adds up before you setup the account.

Automated setups are great. However my suggestion is use MaxMind along with the phone verification. And then still manually check them yourself.

You can still check it after its setup and if you spot a problem then talk to the client about that problem

Agreed. Double check is needed and at least by different sales managers

I think its fine for shared or reseller. Big plans that are intensive such as vps or dedicated you have to deal with chargebacks. On those you should always call and confirm there order as it takes a few min longer but it could prevent it benig used by stolen cc

Before you start a hosting company, make sure that you have alot of funds just in case people do chargeback etc.

MaxMind's fraud check alone is simply useless. You can use a proxy and use the same address/zip of the proxy server's IP location.

Nothing big about that. Unless you are actively filtering proxy server's IP addresses.

Yep, thats exactly what I am doing right now and have had 0 problems for the past, I don't know 8-9 months.

It doesn't matter how small or large the order is. This is business and that is a risk. Even with all levels of protection (manual or automated) fraudsters can easily pull it off. It all depends on how far the fraudster is willing to go and how much your ready to invest in protecting your a$$.
