View Full Version : Freeate.com?

Hi; I have a site hosted on Freeate.com - recently shifted last month, only to discover from Amaresh's post that it's apparently been null routed because one of the sites hosted on it was a phishing site.
I contacted name.com and had a fairly long e-mail debate with them, but they don't appear to see reason and refuse to get the domain back because of "company policy", so looks like that's it...
BUT my site is still up and working for some reason, as well as my DirectAdmin account (I now have to access it via my domain instead of via freeate though), which means that freeate.com still exists somewhere out there (?) because my name servers still point there and everything else appears to be working fine.
Amaresh - if you're reading this, will this be a long term thing, or will my site eventually go down?
Thanks a lot!
(And congrats on being the best free webhost I've had the fortune to come across. Wish I could do something to help get it back up.)

I think you've been cached, thus the ability to still access DA and your website. If you flush your DNS or clear your cache, I doubt you will still have access.
Do backup your files while you still can and download them ASAP.

Anakin, your site still works because you're presumably using your own domain and not a subdomain.
The server has been paid up till the 26th of December, so I reckon your sites should work till then, maybe even earlier if Limestone decide to pull the plug sooner since I've handed in a cancellation request. So I'd start backing up already if I were you.
As for name.com, I had a lengthy debate with them like you and they refused to hand over the domain back to me. However it seems that ns1.freeate.com and n2.freeate.com still point to the server which is why your site seems to be working.
Hope I've cleared a few things up. I wish it didn't have to end this way.
Regards,
Amaresh

Eh? When I did an nslookup on the FreeAte nameservers, they showed me null-routed as well :S

Yeah, it's my own domain.
This sucks; I'm currently overseas on holiday until 21 December with no access to my site files. They're backed up in my laptop a seven hour flight away from my present location, so I'm just hoping that holds... my bedroom has a tendency to get wet during rainy days and my laptop might get short circuited or something. Second most recent backup is several weeks outdated.
Got any suggestions for another free webhost I could shift to once I get back? No ads, SSI, MySQL and PHP supported, approx 100 MB space?
Thanks.

No host can make you an offer here, only recommendations by other members can be made.
If you are looking for offers, you have to post a new thread in the Free Hosting Requests section.

Why u r looking again for free host after suffering?, why don't you go for any payed host instead of free, now u can get even for 1-2$ good space and band width.

Nah, it's all right; I'm back home and I've got complete backups, so it's just a matter of finding a host now.
Have decided I'm willing to pay; problem is that I can't find a suitable webhost. The two best I've found are Freehostia and Awardspace, and both have forbidden word lists. I have lots of forbidden words in my site, albeit used in completely innocent contexts - that's why I left my original host. It's too much trouble to keep having to go through them to weed out the culprit words.
Will go make hosting requests.
