View Full Version : Comparing registrars - Need to change soon!

Hi all,
I'm looking to transfer about 7 or 8 names to a new registrar. I have mostly .com, .net and 1 .tv domains, all at NetSol right now and due to be renewed soon. Been googling around, trying to find sites that compare registrars independently (tough to find) and came across this forum, which seems to have good info (always like a community when it comes to advice like this). I read the sticky here about inexpensive domain name registrars, and some of the ones mentioned were on my shortlist.

Am hoping for some more feedback so I can decide -- I don't need a host, as I have another service for that. My concern is stability, reliability, keeping the expense as low as I can but it doesn't have to be bargain basement. I'd like to know that customer support is dependable, that my registration will be private (to fight spam), locked so no one else can steal my names, and that it will be fairly easy to do what I want with my domains -- such as point one of my domains to another, input my hosts's dns server names in my account, or deal with problems if any come up.

I'm not in the domain biz, not a reseller, do not intend to get many more names... I'm just someone who plans on having a few sites for specific purposes and wants to protect my domain names. I don't know much about this stuff -- I know that my host administers my email addresses that are attached to my domains, but does that mean I need email services from my registrar in order to do that?

So, I've narrowed it down to:

name.com
namecheap
moniker
1and1

Was also considering register.com but they seem to be as expensive as NetSol. There were some others I was looking at but after a few hours of this, they're all a jumble in my head (anyone heard of iregistry?). My sister has pretty happy with dotster but is also looking since the prices went up. this can be a confusing process. I always stayed with NetSol 'cause I figured they were first and most reliable & secure.

Trying to save money in this terrible economy, without risking too much in quality and security. Your feedback is appreciated (tho, just a comment like "name.com is great!" isn't as helpful as a thoughtful comparison of two or more of these). If any of you can give me some insight, I'll be ever grateful.

I would go to namecheap. That is what I am doing with all my domain names. Some of the positives of going with namecheap over any other.

Here is a quote from my recent blog post on the topic.

Source (http://themodshop.net/?p=595)

Recently I registered 2 domain names with namecheap and the process was pain free and great. Now when I bought the other webhosting company I had to transfer the domains. Of course I just switched them over to namecheap. Once again a pain free process. I'm now in the processing of moving all my domain names to namecheap. Why you may ask? Well lets go with my list of it.

* Prices are about the same sometimes a little less. Always check google for coupons.
* Free Whois Protection. [to protect yourself from those pesky spammers]
* Free SSL Certificates. Not everyone needs these but they are still nice to have even if they are free.
* Support is fast and friendly. [Ahem godaddy yours is not much of either]

So if you are looking for a domain name. I suggest namecheap

I will second the recommendation for NameCheap. I have a few domain names with them and they are great.
However, the only downside is that you will need to fork out extra cash for the privacy protection. You can have a look at Stargate/UK2, NetEarthOne, etc and their resellers if you want free privacy protection. ;)

I have gotten free privacy protection with all my domains so far...

Actually NameCheap only provide free privacy protection for the first year and they will charge you for this for subsequent years. Be sure to take note of this. ;)

We have a lot of these types of threads :)
As always, I suggest using Dynadot. They're a great registrar and haven't failed me for the last 2 or 3 years of using them.

You are right about the number of the threads. I suppose also that people have own idols they are happy with

I have only about 200 domains but from my limited experience Dynadot is the best. They are a bit more expensive (you get what you pay for) but if you spend more then $500 or prepay $500 you get cheaper prices.

You said "ONLY"? I suppose that number of 200 domain names is very good amount.
