Out of the movies nominated I've seen A beautiful Mind, Moulin Rouge, Lord of the Rings, No Man's Land, Monsters Inc, Shrek, Amelie, Elling, Harry Potter, Vanilla Sky, Black Hawk Down, Memento, For the birds and Copy Shop.

My parents believe going to the movies is a waste of money and time, so they refuse to "fund" me, and I really have no money of my own... plus it really is a tad expensive...

I've only seen the Lord of the Rings.

Blackhawk Down is one of the greatest combat movies I have ever seen, and hope it wins something because it deserves it. If you go see it you will know what I mean. Actually, I really don't care much for the Oscars..

Amen to that...it's insanely realistic....

My vote goes for Lord of the Rings.

You see it? My favorite part is when they were removing that bullet from that one guy's leg, they zoomed in on the wound, and showed them reaching inside his leg to remove the bullet. Actually that part almost made me throw up. That is how realistic it is.

Peo: Add Blackhawk Down to that list, and I will vote.

I've only seen Moulin Rouge on that list and although it was a well done movie I'm sure, it wasn't the type of movie I care for. With that said I really can't cast a vote as I haven't seen any of them that I cared for.

Which of the above are worth seeing? The Lord of the Rings had great reviews but it seemed like a movie where you needed to know the story behind it as it had a cult like following. If I'm wrong here and you can sit down and watch it without knowing a thing about it, then I would be interested in seeing it.

I know absolutely nothing about the other movies and Apple's trailers are incredibly slow today so I guess I'll have to watch the Oscars to see the short previews.

The Lord of the Rings was one heck of movie... I was amazed of the quality of it. However, it isn't my type of movie. I like Guns, Tanks, and RPGs. :D

Todd: You would be able to watch Lord of the Rings without knowing anything. I'd also recommend Amelie and No Man's Land. But it depends on what type of movies you like. No Man's Land is the most intellegent of all the nominated movies I've seen. (I've met No Man's Land director Danis Tanovic and Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrman  ). Amelie is one of the best feelgood movies of last year.

Giancarlo: Black Hawk Down isn't nominated for Best Picture but I guess I can add another choice for "Other movie than the 5 nominated is my favourite".

I think there are a dozen better war-related movies than Black Hawk Down (even though it's visually a strong movie as most Ridley Scott movies). The original book/newspaper series Black Hawk Down: An American War Story is interesting however and you can read it here online: http://inquirer.philly.com/packages/somalia/.

There is this one really good Vietnam War movie but other than that... Blackhawk down is the best, in my opinion.

Apocalypse Now? I'd say that's one of the best war-related movies ever.

Don't watch Lord of the Rings without reading it first! It is still a good movie (if you don't mind the violence - a friend of mine hated it because of that), but they changed quite a bit of the story. Well anyway that's a peeve of mine - Hollywood majorly changing classic stories to suit their need for overly much violence, etc.
It's still a good movie if you haven't read the books, but i think you should know the real story before you see the movie.
(I still vote for Lord of the Rings, though, because they didn't change it as much as I was expecting - they did a pretty good job and the casting was very good)

Well... originally it was made in 1979... yeah, I guess you are right that is the movie. It probably is tied with Blackhawk down on my list.

Debatable. *sighs*

My favourites for last year were "Memento" and "The Man Who Wasn't There".

I havn't seen that many of the nominated films, but I would prefer it if Moulin Rogue got Best Picture over Lord of the Rings.

well, Moulin Rouge was pretty good too, and as it was original, not a copy of a book, maybe it should win over LotR. 'course, those two were the only ones I've seen, so I don't know about the others...

No it takes place in Somalia. I was talking about war movies in general.

I really HATED Lord of the Rings... Mabe I am too young to sit through it, but I found it extremely boring. The story was good and all, but I think READING the book is way better than WATCHING the movie. I don't know why I didn't like it, all it was was people going around in bare feet.

Not to offend anyone that liked it... Just didn't like it, thats all.

I have only seen LotR on that list. It was a good movie, and I don't think they could have made it any better, but I still didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Oh well. I think it was because I read the book, and knew what was going to happen. Kind of ruins it in a way. But still, you get to picture what it's like in your head first, then compare it to the movie, which is always cool to do.

None of them won sadly, I liked Nicole Kidman in The Others. A film that should have been nominated for some awards.

The whole of India was hoping that the movie from India would win - Lagaan. Well better luck next time :)

IMO LOTR should have won the best film while direction should have gone to A beautiful Mind.

Denzel deserved Best Actor! And Nicole kidman should have got Best Actress.

What happened to Ian for Best supporting?? I couldn't believe it when his name wasn't announced. This was the most imp role in all the 3 movies for Gandalf. Maybe in the 3rd movie he is there everywhere but he is just advising and blah blah not really in the thick of the action.
