View Full Version : Controlling Spam Accounts

I posted my free hosting on this forum and latley I've been getting 20-30 new japanese and chinese accounts. They aren't real people I don't believe(bots), but I don't want these using up all of my free hosting. They're all weird websites. Some of them host illegal material.
I'm thinking about only allowing USA, and UK people free accounts. It's a PAIN sorting through these to find out what is real and isn't.
Any other suggestions?

Only real soloution is banning IP ranges, or manually activiating all accounts but that's not what you want. What most do is signup as real people, activate the email address and set the spam bot to work. Nothing you can do about it about from ban the whole country.

Manually activating takes away from a lot of the spam accounts as you can catch most of them before they get put on the server.

I manually active each account.
So far I get like 15-20/day so there's not so much time.

Yes, this can be very annoying.
I'm currently looking for an abuse bot that automatically scans the websites and detects spam , phishing , etc.
There are some out there that many hosts use. However, the ones I found are too expensive ( $900 ) .
If I find a good one I'll keep you guys updated :)

We banned off users from China for this reason by giving them an ip block on one of our free hosting sites. Banning ip ranges works very well with us.

Try http://www.ihostdev.com/ipanel.html
It says:
- Illegal file scanner, and phishing site scanner
- Remote forced ads, and illegal file scanner
I would just manually setup accounts and allow English Only Sites on the server.

It doesn't help much. I've used iPanel for awhile now, and the only thing its good for is managing clients in the billing system, not hosted accounts.

The scanner also doesn't work at all if you use the remote control function when the iPanel install is not on the hosting server. It also needs to be able to change the users password because it doesn't seem like anyone can remember their password and it must be done manually!

I tried blocking the IP ranges, but there are so many that you cannot get them all. I just reject all application from any asian users from any asian country. My MaxMind tells me when their IP is too far from their reported location, so when that is really high, I reject those also.

What hosting/sign-up system do you use? I use a few different ones and have country blocks in place on some of my sites.
