I am planning to start a free hosting. That's not for extra earning. I have no plan to generate extra income from it at this point. However I should earn enough so that I can keep it free.

I am thinking of giving away adfree hosting

Can you please share, how do you guyz monetize ?

1. If I start with a VPS or reseller, how much duration it may take to recover the cost of server. How much time I may have to pay from my pocket. (I know it may vary, but approximately. tell me how much it took for you)

2. Other then displaying ads on customers sites, what are the other ways to monetize

In advance thanks to all those who are giving free hosting to newcomers.

I have some extra time, I can help in your work for free. PM me if you are looking for some one. (I don't have that much experience of managing servers, but being an experienced programmer, I can quickly grasp it )

To be honest, I dont think there are many free hosts actually earning a penny

That may be true, even I don't have plan to earn. but I should be able to run the business. that is, earn as much as it cost to me.

Do not count on it.

I beleive there are free hosts earning money, but they are definately not many and it has taken them a couple of years to get there. Otherwise they wouldn't still be around. The majority though are not earning enough money to pay the bills and close down after just a few months.

Displaying ads on the free hosts main pages and support forum is one way to get money for ad free hosts. Selling shared hosting is another.

One thing you need to think through is what you would be able to do better, cheaper, smarter or atleast as good as the better free hosts? If you don't have any ideas on that, I think you should wait until you have a more clear idea. Take a look at the competition and try to do it as good or better. On the other hand if you have a lot of money you can purchase a dedicated server or vps and then learn from your mistakes and the advice you get along the way.

I believe I can offer better service, as I have no plan to generate revenue from it. so I won't be overloading server, spend the income in improving the service..

I would suggest that you make sure that you have enough capital income to provide free web hosting without making any income. To be able to be in the free web hosting industry you have to make sure you have the dedication to provide quality support/service and also have the money to be able to support your business for the long term.

OK , Let me give you some suggestion

First , you need earn some money to pay for the server ,

Second you need a stable server , so you need pay for it at first !

We all know we can get back the money in 30 days ! So so many free host sites are down in 30days , but if you want more people use your free host , you need pay for one year server at least and show it to your member !

Infact there are many ways to earn money ,only for you have a good server and service! I think so!

It all depends on how you market the site and the traffic you get.

I do believe there are at least 20 relatively large ones which have decent profit margins. Yea, but in comparison with the total free host population, I'd say that's not many too.

From what I have seen you have to be in business a few years to be able to make decent profit.

Hello Mr. Servlet.

You can monetize by growing a base of the smart users. For every 4 DriveBy signups, (or every 9, etc.) you get one savvy user who really wants to be a part of things.

Your first problem is, this is a market FAMOUS for Olde West Cowboys who float in, advertise heavily to start, then "get bored and quit" or "get hosed and quit".

You have to convince the informed user that you will actually be here long enough for him to add you to his Net Campaign. Elsewhere I posted the news announcement that Yahoo closed Geocities. (I suspect they'll gather up their existing users and rebrand them.) "If Yahoo can't monetize, how can you?"

I would have to agree with you considering that they are offering a service for free.
