View Full Version : Windows 7 64 bit?

I'm using Windows Vista 32 bit right now, and I don't want all my programs to not work if I go 7 RC1 64 bit.

The programs I use the most are: Steam, the Office Suite, Visual Studio 2008, MSN, Adobe CS4, etc.

Any idea if I will have issues using my programs if I upgrade to 64 bit?

All 32bit programs can run in 64bit the thing you should be worried about is hardware compatibility. That and getting drivers ;)

Turns out I would have to do a fresh install :(

before you proceed, make sure you have all the drivers available for 64-bit, finding those is usually the worst, once you got them, you should be fine

If you have latest hardware, you must have 64 bit drivers then :)

Usually not, if you run XP 64-bit.

I did the move and I'm currently running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit RC and I'm surprised by it's performance.

Here's a log of my hardware and software and the issues I got installing it:

Hardware:

VideoCard: XFX 7950GT: Used the Beta drivers for Windows 7 64-bit and only had one crash (most likely random)... works

Mouse: Microsoft wireless 5000 mouse: used the beta drivers from MS and it works

Keyboard: Logitech DiNovo Edge: No software available for Win 7 but the software for Vista 64-bit works but you get a warning at install

The rest of my hardware didn't require driver installs and everything seems to work flawlessly

Software:

CCleaner: Installed properly, didn't try it yet

Daemon Tools pro: My version (4.10.02) doesn't work, the new version is supposed to work, I'll have to purchase an update and see

FileZilla: Works

Google desktop: Incompatible, won't let you install

Kaspersky IS 2009: Works

RocketDock: works

MS Office 2007 Ultimate: Works Note: see issues below

MS Office Visio 2007: Works

Nero 9: Works, I didn't try burning anything yet

SSH Secure Shell: Works

Steam: Works, I didn't install any games yet

Unlocker: Works, didn't unlock anything yet

VLC: Works

Windows Live Messenger with Messenger Plus: Works

WinRAR: Works

Zune: Works, didn't connect my Zune yet but software works

Issues:
1. I had issues when installing and still couldn't fix it. I deleted some partitions of the hdd and I couldn't merge the new space or create more partition than the logical one, so I have 100GB of unassigned space that I can't use. I couldn't fix this from inside Windows Manage either.

2. Exchange: It was a pain in the butt to setup with outlook. I will most likely write a KB on how to set it up eventually

That pretty much wraps it up, I will keep on updating when I add software. I will probably also go grab some 8 GB of memory to replace my 3GB eventually and I will update you guys on the performance boost.

If anyone decides to try it and run into issues, let me know through this thread and I'll do my best to help!

You should try Openoffice.org, 7-zip (MSI), GlarySoft Registry Cleaner, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition, Pidgin, Firefox, GIMP, Wubi, ImgBurn, etc.

Great idea... unfortunately, I could only test the basics of each one since I'm not using any of those on a daily basis. This weekend might be a bit hard but if anyone wants some software tested, feel free to add their request and I will test them when I have time.

7-zip (x64): works (could create an archive)

OpenOffice: works (could open all programs)

Pidgin: works (could connect to my MSN account)

GIMP: works (could open and save an image)

P.S. I will not test any anti-virus software since it's too much trouble for me

P.P.S. furnilover21, please use Could you instead of You should, I have no obligations to do so

Yeah, sorry about that, thanks for the tests though.

I saw you tested CCleaner but not GlarySoft Registry Cleaner. Oh well, guess I'd just have to wait. Not that it matters, I'm happy with Ubuntu 9.04 at the moment with WinXP in Vbox.

I'll get it done sometime this week, I had other obligations this week, the ones I'm planning on not doing are AVG and Wubi.

Like I said, I will be glad to test other request, just let me know. Keep in mind that I have other obligations so it might not get done immediately.

P.S. If you make a request for testing, try to avoid antivirus and large programs such as PhotoShop, AutoCAD, Maya, etc.
