View Full Version : Small issue with Avast Antivirus

Starting yesterday, my avast keeps telling me that the serial I am using is either invalid or pirated key, when I know it isn't.

I mean it is a good antivirus and has always stopped me from getting a virus, but I am guessing there is now a flaw in the system or something.

Is there any other good Antivirus out there that people would recommend?

I have heard that some company's get paid to let viruses in, so I don't want to take no changes.

Well, I don't know what people complain about with mine. McAfee has always worked well for me. Better than Norton. But, if you just want a scanner, I recommend Malwarebytes.

AVG is a well known good AV, although back in my days of understanding virii and the like we all knew that Kaspersky was the king of AVs, so I def can recommend Kaspersky.

If you wanna be completely protected, go for their Internet Security bundle, it includes pretty much everything you'll need (anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-phishing, anti-spam and anti-hacker)

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 is great. I use it and definately recommend it.

As for the problem you're having, I'd recommend giving Avast a call or opening a support ticket with them to explain the problem you're having. It's possible it was flagged up by mistake.

I've always used NOD 32 with no problems. It's cheap, too. Nice and lightweight as well.

I use Kaspersky and it is the best for my purposes. I highly recommend it!

Yeah I've ran into several computers where avast is asking for a new key.

I will give Kaspersky a look into. I changed to Avast Home Edition until I can find a suitable replacement. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I don't use one, Mac user, we're superior  ;)

Nah, seriously, I'd recommend Windows Live OneCare or Norton Internet Security, I've used both in the past in my Windows years and they've been fantastic pieces of security software.

Good choice, I'm sure you'll enjoy this AV

Then what, MS is going open source? Google is going bankrupt? Come on, stop lying now

Seriously, don't! It won't protect you against half of the threats out there!

or Norton Internet Security

Better choice, 2010 is actually not that bad, much better than previous versions

Stop lying, there's way more ---- out there for MS, and I'm alowed a personal opinion on what I think about Mac's. Maybe you should be more light hearted and take a joke once in a while :cool2:

Aww come on now, the same can be applied to my post, I replied to a joke by a joke. Although I hate Macs because I had some many problems with them way back and I dislike Apple for many different reasons, I honestly don't have a problem against mac users.

Sorry if the tone of my post wasn't clear enough, my bad.

Norton or Kapersky.. NOD32 is borderline, but I find it's a bit of a resource hog at times. I don't use any personally for Windows anymore. For small checks once in awhile use Malwarebytes/Spybot S&D. I actually use a AV on MacOS.

I am thinking of either trying Avast Professional one more time as it has always been good, or trying Kaspersky out, beings I am getting a lot of good comments regarding them.

I didn't ask but if you bought the software, why don't you just give them a call or send them an email. I'm sure they can fix this. It's most likely a ----up in their DB.

You are using the free version. Get a new key. You have to get a new key every year.

I used to use monitoring AV but now I just use Malwarebytes, you only get virus's from installing something anyway, iv never been infected by just looking at web pages or anything, only from installing a activex or some random program.

I also run spybot some times.

Real time AV is overrated and just using resources for no reason (if your experienced enough)

A good software firewall that monitors registry changes is a must as it can help you destroy a virus infecting your PC.

Nothing beats safe mode, scanners and a firewall.

I bought and installed Kaspersky Internet Suite last night, but now when I try to sign on to AIM it will not let me know. Is this an issue with Kaspersky and if so how can I fix it?

Go into the control panel (of Kaspersky) and into system security, click settings beside application filtering and look into what category (trusted, low restricted, high restricted or untrusted) it is.

Did you put your firewall in prompt mode when you installed kaspersky?

Did you turn off Windows firewall during KIS install?

It is being shown as a trusted application

This. Surprised it hadn't been said till now.

try disabling the firewall and if that doesn't help, re-enable it and disable application control. This will help pinpoint the issue.

I just tried this and it didn't solve the issue either. I am really stumped. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled aim, but no good.

If that didn't work, try shutting down the whole AV, the issue might not be from Kaspersky

I guess it did not configure correctly the first time around, as when I uninstalled Kaspersky AIM worked just fine, then I left it running when I reinstalled and now everything seems to be on track.

The only thing it ever tells ms is it has been updated and that is all.
