i signed up for a domain name and they're asking me to list 2 name servers. i did look at their faq's and this was there answer to what a name server was- A name server is a computer that contains a list of domain names and the associated IP addresses. When a domain name is typed in a web browser, the Name Server associates that with the IP address and the correct web site opens in the web browser.
So what do i have to do exactly? What do i need to type, in the 2 name server blanks?

Your nameservers are just 2 IPs that will point your domain to your site. Normally they would be listed some place on your host's site, but if not, just email them and ask.

 Just make up one for now, and when you get a host (if you already haven't got one) just point them to there.

Just make up one for now, Actually, that isn't possible with many registrars as they verify the IPs of the name server you enter.

DNS (domain name server) lets you point your domain name (www.mybogussite.com) to your website's numeric IP address. Your webhost is assigned a range of IP addresses. If you are on a freehost or cheap host your IP address is likely dynamic within this range. If you pay more you can get a static IP address.
First you have to point the domain name from your registrar to your webhost. The webhost will have 2 Name Servers that you have to point to (the 2nd is for redundancy). These name servers should be listed somewhere on the hosts website (on the FAQ?).
The webhosts Name Server acts as a gateway to the many sites hosted by the webhost. Once the Name server recieves a request it has to know which site on the host to send it to. So the 2nd step is to set this up on the webhosts site. There should be instructions on the FAQ.
So if you had a site on Netfirms, you would first point www.mybogussite.com from your registrar to the Netfirms name servers and then specify that www.mybogussite.com requests recived by the Netfirms name servers be pointed at www.mybogussite.netfirms.com
Hope this helps. If I've got it wrong then I expect someone will jump all over me. ;o)
Q: Do all freehosts support domian pointing? My ISP does not support it for users websites.
