According to that article, they will still have the original "free" service, and a new and improved one with "reliable downloads, files will be scanned for viruses, and all songs will be available all the time"

Hmm, this seems kind of strange... If Napster can operate their existing free service, and offer the pay one concurrently, then I'm guessing that would make the free service that is in use now, technically legal. Or at least make it so that record companies and artists don't have a problem with it.

Why then, if the record companies are perfectly OK with it, would anybody want to pay to use the service? "reliable downloads"? How can Napster regulate downloads? "all songs available all the time", hmm never have I not found a song that I was looking for on Napster. and "virus checking"?

Hmm.. unless napster comes out with some more features for their new "improved" service, I don't know why anyone would want to use it.

Why would someone pay for a free service with a few small upgrades? That is crazy...but at least the free service isn't going down...woo hoo!

If Napster went down, there are many others that would happily replace it, so we wouldn't lose our song database.

From what I understand Napster will store the MP3's themselves, no?

Anyway, I'm sure they will add more features, this is all preliminary stuff, it won't see the light of day until this summer.

Napster would not have died if they did shut down the main servers because you can just connect to one of the about 500 server networks like: OpenNap, FastNap, iNapNOW, NakedFEET, MusicCity, NapNet, and many more types that I don't feel like listing.

you can start your own napster server too, with open nap and a dns.

there are many many alternatives audiognome is a favourite, and TekNap rules (esp for unix)

The only reason napster is starting the pay service is to get the record companies off their back.
