On Angelcities.com We offer a couple of different options for banners. 1 option is static banner at the top of every page. Another option is a pop-up for every page, this is the same size basically as the static but a good option for frames people. Yesterday we implemented the option to have 2 pop-ups for the user upon entering the persons site. 1 is a POP-UP and the other is a POP-BEHIND. Once the user sees this, they do not get another banner from the server for 3 hours which I assume would be a good time per visit on the server. I think this is a good way to allow minimal banners but still allow the revenue to stay on angelcities.com to support itself. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions on this type of banners. Will people use it? Did I waste my time writing the script?
Please no flames, I am trying to make the best FWP and give many options on the banners and need all the help I can get.

Thanks,

personally i think its a good idea. get the pop-ups over with when you first go to a site. i think the most annoying thing is having a pop-up on every single page.

I have a few questions.

The pop up- Do you just get it once when you first enter the page, then 3 hrs later or for every page on the site?

The pop-behind why have it pop behind where no one can see it? i guess they see it when they exit the page.

I would go for this if the pop up only happened once evry 3 hrs, and the behind one never came above the page you were viewing.

If the user doesnt close the pop behind window, does a new one open in 3 hrs, or does it use the same one?

It would be bad if there was more than one pop behind.

Just once, we use an IP tracking system that only shows the banners to the users the 1 time per 3 hours

This is a banner that comes at the same time and loads behind the current window. Essentially, the user gets 2 windows upon entering, one in front of the content and 1 behind. Currently we are using popuptraffic.com. This also requires the use rto not have any popups which I don't see as a problem since 3/4 of my users don't use there own popups.

Then, if you were a user of angelcities, I think you would find yourself using them :). I do however notice every once in awhile the popbehind doesn't pop at all<and that would be our loss, they still wouldn't get one if they didn't originally> or sometimes pops in front with the other, but either way 2 banners per visitor, and no more.

<quote>If the user doesnt close the pop behind window, does a new one open in 3 hrs, or does it use the same one? </quote>
I beleive that it would just leave it alone, and re-pop it into the current window. Once we go to mulitple advertisers besides popuptraffic, then yes, if they are still open, a new one would still open, it is only fair to the advertiser.

It would be bad if there was more than one pop behind.
</quote> By more than one do you mean, that even after 3 hours they shouldn't get another one, please expand on this.

Thank you and Phrozen for your thoughts on this.

hmm, and I apparently don't know how to use quotes, oh well you get the drift :)

It would be 2 pop-ups on whatever page they enter on, and nothing more for 3 hours. Also, lets say that visitor goes to another users website utilizing the POP-UPS, they don't get one as all users share a IP database :)

This is a very good idea, but the cash revenue would lower dramatically. Are you ready to lose cash? You probably will with that sort of program.

I ran banner free for a really long time, and am trying to give users the ability to have a less hassell<?sp> banner system and still make money to pay for the service. This turns out to be a great option to do just that. I am not interested in making a fortune, just wanna keep it running itself for upgrades ect. That was also the reason for 2 and not 1.

What about user placable banners? That may give about the same revenue as the 3 hours pop-up one and may appeal to some users (ie. Me).
Also, I find your idea very innovative and I wish you the best of luck in your FreeWebHosting Company!

I have yet to find an advertiser that will allow the user placeable banners as that is something I have looked into. I am hoping to have that in the near future upon finding an advertiser. The problems that I see with it are they put them in the bottom with about 200000 <br> tags before it, or they add the banner code but then cover it up with layers, as they do with my current banners, but at least I know where to look for it. Plus we have many systems in line to catch those sorts of problems. If you can think of a good way to allow user_placeable banners I would love to hear it.
Thanks

Is there a way to force banners to be "above the fold?" And visible?

Good idea, but I hate any pop ups whatsover. Probably better than a banner on every page though....

How would you detect a fold? My html experience is horrible, I am good to get a page to come up on the internet, however, if I know what it does and how it does it, I can manipulate it to do what I need through coding. :)

Actually, I don't think you can detect if something is above the fold, I was just wondering. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck on your innovative idea. Let's revolutionize the hosting industry!

freewebsites.com has an option for one pop up and the visitors doesn't see it again for 24 hours...
