Antivirus question

Has anyone ever wondered why there were so many viruses? Could it be that antivirus companies create them or hire someone to do it?

That or todays youth is just bored. :p

I feel the anti virus companies could do that but chances are they don't here are my reasons.

There is no need, there are a bazillion hackers out there that do it for fun, if they did they would just have to pay a developer to make them. So basically I am saying, there are enough people out there creating enough viruses to feed the software companies that make anti viruses.

It's a game of cat-and-mouse. The virus-writers see how long their viruses will go until virus companies make definitions to catch the viruses and the companies see how fast they can make definitions to catch the viruses.
