If your computer is connected to two different networks (and has two NIC's in it) you can use your computer as a 'bridge' to connect the two networks together.

For example I have two NICs one is connected to my DSL modem, and the other is connected to my home network. but I have it set up as a bridge connection so other users in my network can connect to my computer and then just go straight to my DSL connection. There are other possible configurations but this is a common way.
