Is it possible to have IE 4 and IE5.5 on the same machine and how? When I've tried to install an earlier version of Internet Explorer my machine says that I already have newer version and It's not possible to install an old one.

It would be really nice having different versions of IE when trying out my own webdesigns. I have Win 98 and IE5.5., NS 4.08 and 6 currently on my system.

is this possiböle and how, thanks

I've done it. I have IE 4.0, IE 5.0, Netscape 4.05, Netscape 4.7, and many more browsers. :) With IE 4.0, when you do the auto upgrade thing, there is an option that allows you to keep IE 4.0 and install IE 5.0 on your machine. I've done this a long time ago, so I forgot all the steps, but it can be done.

In the installation procedures, there's an option that lets you have both copies of IE on the same computer. You install IE 4.x first, then install 5.x. Click on any button that may seem to give you some more options and you will find it eventually, it's there, I know.

I've forgotten the installation steps, but I think there's a thing where you can choose the location of your files? dunno, maybe Micro---- IE's installer doesn't allow that, but if the installer does, then you can just choose a different folder to install it in, and you'll have two copies :D

Installing to a different folder does not work because Internet Explorer puts 95% of its files in the Windows directory.

Thanks.

The only problem is that I already have IE 5.5. installed..but I'll try to find the option altough the version of IE4 I have on cd explicitly says that it is not possible to install an older version if I already have newer (and the installation process stops there).

The different folder works with NS.

delete it, then install 4, then install 5 selecting "keep previous verson" or whatever. :)

Then get a real browser! ;)

Traces still alllways seem to be left by the un-install program.

I tried this. Installed IE 5, 100megs lost. Uninstalled IE 5 50megs regained. This was on Windows 95 with no previous version of IE. Seems like they kept the Java Machine and some other things on the computer.

damn, never knew that (or noticed), 'cause the setup took so long I left the room and went to bed. :D when I got back it told me it needed to restart the computer, and after it's done updating the registry files (a process that took forever too) I have never seen IE4 again...

my apologies for my incorrect information. :o

I have no idea why, but I find IE 4 to be faster than IE 5 in rendering.

well, duh. lots of softwares are worse with each upgrade. I found Word 2000 in a worse state than 97. Same thing goes to Sigma Plot. All they really do in the "newer versions" is rearrange the buttons and hide some features and options from you so that you'll have to go and search for it.

Note that I said "lots of", meaning that the above statement does not apply for all softwares. :p
