I need to learn how to use Redhat Linux... and so, I am going to install it on one of my computers.

I'd rather have it on a seperate computer; than play around with all my existing partitions that I've got nicely set up for myself.

So... I need to know... what are the system requirements for it?

I've searched around everywhere and can't find anywhere thatw ill tell me.

maybe this (http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7.2-Manual/install-guide/ch-table.html) can help?

as for the hard drive, you can install a good ammount of resources for arround 1.5 gigs and under... everything for 2.3GB

Hrm, so thanks.

So would this be enough?

- 3gig hard drive
- pentium 233 (or something there abouts)
- 64mb ram

... What sort of video card does it want? Is 2mb enough?

I have RedHat right here.

For a Workstation installation with just GNOME or KDE requires at least 1.5 GB space, with both 1.8 GB.

Server requires 1 GB for minimal installation without X, at least 1.3 GB for all components except X, and 1.8GB with everything including GNOME and KDE.

Laptop is the same as Workstation.

Custom requires from 350mb to at least 3.5gb

You need at least two partitions for RedHat, a root (/) and a swap (swap).

RedHat recommended space:

Swap (<swap>), at least 32mb, should be at least equal to your computers ram recc. double your ram, max. 2GB of swap.

boot (/boot) partiton 50mb is all that is needed, it holds the linux kernel.

root (/) partition needs 1.2 to 3.5gb or more as needed.

I run RedHat 7.2 with these specs:

450MHz AMD K6-2
62Mb Ram
6Gb Hdd (3Gb for Win98 and 3Gb for RedHat)
Onboard Video (in Windows capable of 1024x768 in 32-bit Truecolor mode, in RedHat the next size up err, 11**x*** in True Color 32-bit
Onboard Sound

So yea that should be all you need.

BTW X is the GUI used by most Linux's GNOME and KDE require X to be installed. the reason why i have ** in the screen resolution because i cloudn't remember the number.

My server that I am getting ready to install linux on has this...

950mhz amd athlon (266 fsb)
512mb ddr ram (not sure what the bus speed for it is)
40gig drive, and I am putting in another 20gig before I install
it has like a 16mb video but it is a server not a gaming puter
ATA hardware, ULTRA160 someday :D Although i'll probably end up getting an ATA-133 controller cause it is cheaper and only 27mbps slower the ULTRA160, even though the RPMS aren't quite as fast
And the rest of the basics, I am going to see if the local puter store will let me run it from there T1 lines

i think u misunderstood us. the purpose of our servers (or mine in this case) is to learn redhat. the specs of your server are way to much for a "testing" server. the point of having your own server (in my opinion) is to also learn how to network it and run it form your own lines (not use someone elses connection). I could take it to the computer store i work @ and hook it up to the T1.. but that defeats the purpose of learning.

Sorry I am just happy to have the thing, since I got such a good deal on it (free)

I found a page at http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/
that should help it is a hardware compatibility list

I only use 3gb for my RedHat and i have a dialup connection, so i really can't host myself.

RedHat 7.2.92
20gb + 4gb RAID 0 setup = total space 22gb / 356 swap and 150 /boot
CPanel for hosting
32mb ATI Rage Fury Pro (plays UT very nice :D )

Geforce 4, pfff thats a budget card, gf3 ti 500 will whips its but off, like i care if urs is better than mine.................. its not like it matters that much, as long as it does the job its perfectly fine :)

And what is with Windows XP Pro, i recall this post's subject being RedHat Linux.

Sure, the Geforce4 MX series suck--just like all the MX series cards--but the Geforce4 Ti4600 128 MB DDR is easily the best card on the market today.

I prefer to have a good 16mb graphics card, the only reason to get a good card is unless you are a gamer, and the only reason to get a GF3 or better is if you are a really HARDCORE gamer, otherwise you are just wasting money.

Is this a home server? And if so, what kind of connection do you have and why would you waste the money for CPanel on a home server?

The joy of linux is that is runs on old and slow hardware. I run RH 7.2 on all my linux machines in my apartment:

Pentium 75
64 MB RAM
1.3 GB HD
2 SMC 10/100 NICs
Basically I use this as a router, it secures my network (firewall), runs a dhcp network for my internal network, and does dns caching.

Pentium II 233
128 MB RAM
6 GB HD
1 Linksys 10/100 NIC
Serves as a mail server (running exim) and webserver

Athlon Thunderbird 1GHz
512 RAM
32MB DDR Radeon
30 GB Quantum Fireball ATA/100 7200 rpm
40 GB Quantum Fireball ATA/100 7200 rpm
As you would expect, this is my primary linux workstation. It also runs it's own webserver and database server. It also serves as a file server for my other machines (linux and os x)

I'm also looking to get another old machine (200-300 MHz) range to work as a full-time music player and then rig up some scripts and other hardware so I can control it from my palm via bluetooth. Try to do that with windows :)

So linux runs on all kinds of hardware. There's really no reason to use a nice machine to just serve web pages. The best part is that old computer stuff is cheap.
