56K modem.
I got 26400bps on my Barbapapa's computer. How to make it goes up to 56000bps?

That's usually an ISP issue. I doubt you would ever get it to the maximum. On a good day I am connected at 4.8 but usually it is around 2.5 - 2.9.

Try cleaning all your connections between the phone line and your computer. I have heard that can help? And make sure you have the latest drivers/firmware for your modem.

Back when I was using dialup I was always connected at 53333bps.
Maybe you just have really old phone lines in your house.

The best thing for cleaning electrical contacts is a pencil eraser, then use a soft brush to remove the debris. But as to the connection speeds, more often than not it's degradation in the phone lines in your area, and there isn't a lot you can do about it. In the US, if you can connect at 12.8, the telco isn't required to upgrade their lines, although I suppose it's possible that they might make some attempt at it.

Go to Wal*Mart and get this 12' phone line thats made for DSL modems. It's about 15$ and it's really thick and silver with blue ends and gold plated contacts. It's in the computer accessories section of Electronics. I have a 28k modem on this computer and it downloads at about 10kbps because of it :tongue2: :p :biggrin2:
[add]
OK OK the little download speed thing on Opera goes up to about 10 WHATEVER depending on how long the page loads. So the longer it takes the page to load, the faster it will download.

That is impossible, your modem is rated in bits, not bytes, so if your modem is 28 Kilobits, then your maximum download speed would be 3.5 Kilobytes/Second. So your modem cannot go up to 10 Kilobytes a second, niether can a 56k its maximum is about 7 kilobytes/second.

Well, you should have looked at the cord to see if it would fit...
There may be adapters you can buy?

HTML-guru was right though, those cables can increase your speed. but I have never heard of it doing it that significantly.

I have a 56 K modem and I can only get 53,333 bps when connected on my ISP server.
I do think it has to do with your ISP. If you are on AOL then since there are about 30 million other users your chance at connecting at a hire 56 K modem maximum speed are slim.

HGW As surprising as this may sound, AOL was the best dialup ISP I was ever with. I was always connected at 53,333bps and never got disconnected. They provide an excellent service, at least over here anyhow.

You were supposed to get a phone line, not a network cable. Try exchanging it. If they dont let you exchange it, call the manager.

The network cable is for LAN.
I'm sure Html-Guru meant something else...
Try to buy another new phone wire for 56k i'm not sure whether it will work or not.
When my phone wire was spoiling, it connected at 19000bps
Then I changed the phone wire, it connected at a nice speed of 52000bps. Your modem may be one of the factors too, on my old computer, I get around 36000bps with a new phone wire.

Yeah it is very suprising that AOL has every member connecting at 53,333 bps. I know years ago I had an AOL account and I was lucky if I got 24,000 bps or even connected to the internet. It must have changed drastically over the years.

AOL here in Argentina sucks... it completely sucks. I was lucky to connect at 14400 bps when we were using it and it was supposably 56k when my dad tried. Surprisingly enough we canned it after the first day.
It only has gotten worse since I tried it from what I hear.

I absolutly in every way hate aol, there is nothing good about it. I know that it sucsk anywhere in california, because I have been everywhere in california and used it. I have seen it connected at 26.4 and that is the fastest, in my neigborhood everyone that used to have it connected at 14.4kbps and mainly everywhere else.
Maybe it is AOL DSL that conects at 54kbps lol.

Nobody has mentioned how your software settings can improve your speed. Get a program like MTUSpeed Pro and it will mess with your Maximum Transfer Unit. When I was on dialup, this gave me an extra 8kbits faster connection.
The fastest I've seen around here for dialup is when I would regularly get 45,333/sec after using that program. Before that, it was 37500 or something like that. We have old phone lines I guess.

Does that program work with DSL?

You can speed it up (maybe) by fiddling with your registry.

I know it has significantly sped things up for me.

Hey,
The 56k Modem speed depends on your main board, it do depends on the modem, but most modems can handle 56kbps.
I got a Xcel2000 Mainboard , installed a modem, got 14, 400 bps to 19, 200 bps. Then installed an Acorp Main board, got 28, 800 to 31, 200 bps.
After that i thought intel would be the faster, i installed Intel mainboard. Got 26 to 28.
Finally i got a GFXCEL mainboard from my friend for 1 day, and i got 52 to 54.6 on that main board.
I have to get that mainboard very soon
I didnt changed any modems. It was Conexant Soft56k Modem.
A lot of Stuff from China and Taiwan kept in my computer store :biggrin2:

AOL has DSL?
or is it Roadrunner, which got bought by Time Warner?
No wait Roadrunner is Cable, so what is AOL's DSL?
pfft, even if AOL had DSL, you'd probably get disconnected often...
guitarnerd
April 20th, 2002, 01:18
I bet it is just on the road runner lines and they install AOL as the defualt browser, but not all places have time warner cable, like here, but a lot of people here have cable so I am not quite sure how it works
