The new domains

Read this at http://www.registrarsasia.com/ wanted to know if anyone knew much about it...

New Top Level Domain Names To Be Released Soon

RegistrarsAsia is happy to announce that new Top Level Domain Names (TLD's) will be officially released by the global governing body (ICANN) early in the new year. Following a recent press release ICANN are committed to shortly releasing six new names which will appeal to company's wishing to specialise in a particular internet field. Three likely examples speculated so far are: .web, .shop and .travel. As always RegistrarsAsia are committed to offering these domain names at a very competitive pricing structure. Keep watching this space for further information.

ICANN and some other guys had a big meeting on the first quarter of this year and agreed for more TLD...however they could not agree on the price. There are already several companies who are trying to pre reserve some of these, but I dont know what level of authority they command. The most popular of course will be .web and I think .shop will be a certainty...

Beyond that, is anyones guess...

Do you think it will help remove the hype around '.com'?

I think that .web and .shop will be extremely popular and could dethrone the aging .com... especially since almost every word in the dictionary already has a .com associated with it...

There will also be a .per I believe for personal sites, but I dont think this will be all that popular...I think the .web will be the new "in" web TLD..but thats just my oppinion...

Yea, it would be good to be able to actually get a few words that you wanted for your website names...

(no examples because i'm hoping to get them in the new domains ;) )

What's everyone else think?

Sounds great to me, hopefully the pricing will be in a fairer range then what networksolutions did with .com name. Hopefully none of that $70 bull----.

Although I think .web will be popular, I don't think that it will dethrone .com. "Dot-com" is now synoymous (I can't spell) with the Internet and no matter how popular .web is, .com will always be the king.

I agree .com will stay the natural default for some time. But the other new domains should lower the value of the .coms. If you currently have something of value that you are looking to sell off maybe now is the best time.

Well, in a purely business sense, .com companies have a sort of love-hate relationship with investors. At one time, .com meant instant money, now its synonymous with lack of profit. .web and .shop may provide the invigoration of the market and attract more potential venture capitalists.

Also, if we consider growth on the iternet, most people would rather get buyacar.shop then reallycoolcars127.com, which is what i will be in about year from now.

I do think that in a few years, almost everyone will have a personal domain..

I think initially, the new domains may be expensive, due to a virgin name selection, etc... But after all the good names are gone, the prices will go down...

Then how come you don't see a lot of international top level domains bing used ".to" ".it" ".cc" ".ws" out of the hundreds available... I believe in a few years time we will all be able to buy top level domains for a few grand and have whateverwewant.whateverelse :).

Because those domains sound crappy... .cc and .ws sound like poor immitations of .com...and they are country domains, not real TLDs...

Trust me, there will definately be a huge market for these things...

And I dont think that in a few years you can have any TLD you want...first off ICAAN would never allow that, and the database system to operate such a sporadic list would be horrible to operate efficiently...

Well if your an Internet Start-up with a desperate need for your own top level domain you could always buy a small island ;)

.com Commercial
.net Network
.org Organization
.edu Education
.mil Military
.gov Government

It's all becoming clear to me now :p, .web would still be better in the long run, and the other proposed ones would make more sense too. Instead of say, yournameshop.com you could get yourname.shop .. it all sounds weird now because they are new, but the net has only been .commercialized for a few years.

If you mean fine as in "more confusing", then I'd agree. Ever run across a mixed name? (mixed?) Like:

Hostcom.net or Supernet.com ???

There are plenty of "web" domains already like Hostweb.com and I just can't wait to be further confused by seeing Hostcom.web etc., etc., etc. Not to mention that trademark lawyers are going to be hiring extra staff I'm sure.

If you can't get Amazon.net or Amazon.nu without violating something or other, then you won't be able to get Amazon.web or Amazon.shop either. I think it would have been a better idea 5 years ago. Now, I think it'll just be a mess. Add to that ICANN being involved and you've surely got a plan for disaster :)

Let's sit back and watch the millions of lawsuits that are gonna erupt over cyber-squatters. You can bet there are gonna be some rich lawyers!

November 8th, 2000, 14:10
lol :D, now where do I find lawyers? weblawyers.web, lawyers.web or weblawyers.com? ;)

But the big question is will you guys be getting one (.web, .shop, .personal etc.) when they come out?

That seems to be the best out of the ones I've seen proposed.

I think the samething... I bet lots of these people
will be wanting to get names that are taken now
but the problem is, they will sue if someone gets there
company name.. now.. where can I get a pepsi.web at?? ;o)

Maybe whoever is selling the .web domains etc. will protect names already trademarked.

Much like the .tv domains, nbc.tv abc.tv fox.tv etc. etc. are all reserved. And regular names like, porn.tv sitcom.tv etc. are a lot more in price that something like mysiteaboutnothing.tv

cleggo
November 13th, 2000, 18:29
If they protect too many trademarked domains, it will then
again limit what can be registed, but it would be best
if they did protect them.

Yea, but what has to happen to get your name reserved? do you have to have a copyright or a trademark? Because Yahoo is in the dictionary... how come they get to sue other people who use a word in the dictionary?

Please correct me if i'm wrong ;)

Trademarked if anything, though don't think that they've figured all this out yet. Meetings are going on today through Wed. or Thurs. and there should be some *exciting news* posted soon. I'm on the edge of my seat brimming with anticipation. /sarcasm
