Bruce

there is a hack that will put sponsor images into the catagory - see here http://sitepointforums.com/

Bruce
April 14th, 2002, 23:32
That's not really a hack, just a little template coding...

Probably because hosts aren't paying to advertise for a category, just one forum in the categroy.

yeah it is a hack, i seen it at vbulletin.org

it allows you to choose via the acp

The font should be smaller as well as the image. It makes me avoid FWS forum now.

Maybe Peo wanted to FWS to be even more popular (and therefore cost him more money) so he adopted the ways of SitePoint (which is much more popular than FWS). :p

However, I agree. The ad is annoying, and it should be removed. I bet the users at SitePoint hate those ads too. ;)

hopefully peo doesn't resort to banner ads :(

The ads on Sitepoint is much larger than here. I saw one ad being 143x184 + text. Here we only allow 125x125 + text. WHT also have larger ads than we do. And we currently only have ads in the Paid Hosting forum and the Free Webspace forum.

isolized, our sponsors wish to sponsor specific forums and not categories.

He has had some already :) You mean you didn't notice??? :p

I don't see the big deal, how many sites do you guys frequent these days that don't have advertising of some kind? Helps to offset the running costs of big sites and this is a big site.

I'm not bothered by it.

Have you seen some of those Yahoo ads?

is0lized
April 16th, 2002, 14:28
that has nothing to do with this forum, i dont think yahoo would advertise here

Blank Verse
April 16th, 2002, 14:34
It's not neccessarily Yahoo, but ads of that magnitude are scary, so if someone wanted to pay for that type of ad here, well, that would really suck.

Perhaps you need to increase your resolutions? ;)

It really doesn't seem that large at all to me. Also keep in mind this is a free forum so advertising is to be expected. If you don't want to see the ad I have a great idea, contact Peo and offer to pay for a month of advertising and then decline to place an ad there for the month. :D

With the rate FreeWebspace.net is growing at I'm impressed it only has this much advertising. I'm sure Peo could obtain sponsors for just about all the sections on the forum.

Trust me, these ads aren't that bad. Just be thankful there isn't an ad-covered splash page before entering every forum.

Oh, I totally agree, these ads are more than bearable. the netfirms one may be a little large by this site's standards, but I've seen (and been annoyed by) far worse.

you get a couple of pop ups every page.

anhedonia
April 17th, 2002, 03:28
And they're vaguely porn-related, ugly, huge and hard to close.

Blank Verse
April 17th, 2002, 03:29
Porn related? It's been a while since I've been at a Virtual Ave site, I guess.

anhedonia
April 17th, 2002, 05:57
Well not exactly porn...But you know, chicks draped over the banners suggestively, advertising stuff that's got nothing to do with their presence. That kind of lame stuff.

This thread has really strayed of the topic of advertising on these forums

Have you all noticed the new ad in general discussions? :p

Yes, I have. I just have one question...Can I even trust an Aussie hosts at all? I haven't had very many real-life experiences (in fact, I have had none) with smart Aussies. :D Don't worry, I'm not talking about you guys. I can't judge your intelligence simply over a message board.
