Blame it on the abusers who took advantage of the very relaxed advertising approach. I plan to restructure and be back with the same plan, ad free, for only $4 a month. Hopefully it will work out better.

How did they abuse it?

I'm guessin that they abused the fact that they trusted people to put up their banners.

The most painful form of abuse that a host can receive is bandwidth theft. This is very expensive .One day near the beginning of NetCabins, I had a $2000 bill for one day of transfers by an abusing user. We were unable to find who this user is, so they got off free and we paid THEIR $2000 bandwidth fee. This is most likely to bring down a host. Second most likely would be a software pirating website, where the software developers have something up their rear and they threaten you with court appearances.
There are a number of other things which can also cause problems but those two are the most likely as far as service abuse.
Another one that's more harassment than it is "service abuse" is rude emails from members. Some of those emails hurt, and they make you think twice before finishing up the tech support tasks.

Where do you guys get the sponsors that help you pay for all ths?

Just by not placing the banner at all or on all pages. As I explained at http://www.syanet.com/close.htm, I wanted the user to have the power to control the colors of the bar and the wording on it. By them having control over these two things, it would only help their sites apperance. To accomplish this, I had to place the ad in the users directory. And unfortunatley, most felt the need not to display it. Secondly, as NC_TOM pointed out, illegal files are a big problem. I had multiple sites uploading MP3's. I felt it it was best, before I got to many sites hosted, to just close up shop and restructure. I may be back later this month in one form or another. And I do want to apoligize to everyone that abided by the terms and will lose their account.

The only way to avoid something like that is to go spaceports style and have a popup if the ad is not displayed.

syanet, going spaceports sytle would help you, even if it loses customizability. Besides, you don't need an ad banner to be customized. Therefore, instead of a bar, why don't you try a banner?

Banners aren't really gonna make much money though. Whether it is CPC or CPM.
Would it have been possible for you to be able to customise the ad bar yourself for every site? I mean like... have it automatically inserted into the top of every page and then, look at each seperate website... and put a relevent pre-entered search term into the search box, and make the allclicks link also relevant to the site itself? It would be lots more work, but would ensure more money?
And what if you also had some sort of script written. So that although the little bar at the top was automatically inserted on every single page... the website owner could customise the colours and stuff somehow, but they wouldnt have control over actually placing it on their page?

Actually, SpacePort's main source of revenue is their 404 page because it is *COVERED* with ads. That might be an idea, too.

Yeah, I just signed up with them for just under a week and it was a shock to see they turn to a paid hosting service. I just finished uploading my files and stuffs with my 56k and plus all those times I had to fix my pages, hehe. Well, it's life, anything can happen.

Syanet, if you need a hand I can give you any asistance either programming, discussing how to to previent things like this or the technical aspects of making scripts automatically detect and put banners on members sites. I would want to help out any FWS in need... I have experienced it all and where i think your specialty is maybe configuring the server where mine is scripting. So I offer my advice free of charge,
ICQ me sometime 9499326 or mailto:webmaster@digital-avatar2.com
Thanks, Phil G

The really sad thing about this, is that their idea for an ad was a very good one. At least you could customize the look, wording and placement. I mean, how many times have you went to an FWP, signed up, uploaded your very sweet---- site with flash, php, javascript and real fancy use of html, and then got an ad banner talking about Vagisil and other, um, "female hygeine" products? I'm tellin you, about three times I have gotten banners for yeast infections and how to rejuvinate your sex life after 60. Needles to say, that scared away a lot of people ;)

<<MOD EDIT>>
it's unfortunate that Syanet had to change its service. However, for $4.00/month I guarantee all of you that their hosting will be top-notch. All us FWP providers know the damage a few abusive users can do.

Syanet:
Make sure to have everything ironed out before you re-open. I made the mistake of opening before everything was ready, and that makes it a lot harder to run things. You will have less trouble if you aren't still configuring the server, ad system, etc. months after re-opening.

I know what you mean. I rushed it when I opened as well. Anyone that used the sign up form knows that :).

Did it at least use sendmail? Mine didn't. It opens up the users e-mail clients an tried to send an e-mail from their. About 10% of the signups come through blank.
