Woo hoo, UPS delivered 3 Linksys HPN200 HomePNA phone line networking cards to my house at 5pm I just got them all set up about an hour ago, it was my first time networking and in ways it was harder, cause it was easier than I though (if that makes any sense). Anyway, I have been testing the speed and it is pretty fast, more than fast enough for what we need. And it runs great, and everyone now shares my DSL, so if you are on a budget, and want to network homePNA is the way to go!

i got a network setup but i use a hub... my 2 main comps are alwys connected to it and sometimes i connect my laptop to it using a 25 foot cat5 cable (lol) o well... im plannin on gettin a wireless network card soon (after i buy more ram for my laptop)...

i still got a 56k but after i get some good cash rolling in... im gonna get cable or dsl...

i thought a phone line network was kinda slow? my friend got it and he dont like it... he might change it to all wireless...

My house has 3 computers routed together. It's awesome!

I, for one, would not want a wireless network.

A wireless network would not do well in our house. We have very thick walls, with a lot of metal studs. So it was either homePNA or using those power plug networking. HomePNA was cheaper. Maybe one day we'll hardwire some cat6 through the walls, but if I do that I am gonna have a 1000mbps hub and network.

Is wireless slower than a normal network?
Or is it the same?

woo, that is funny pathetic, uless you go with 802.11a network it is much much slower, like about 1/10 of the speed, and now days more like 1/100 of the speed. Unless you want to spend a ton of money on 802.11a products the 802.11b are 11mbps that is bits not bytes.

I'm a computer guru. I like computers. I like how they work. I like to build and fix computers. I like cables. To have a wireless network defeats the purpose of having a zillion cables laying around! That's the best part of having a network. Seeing that "this hub" is connect to "this router" because of "this blue cable". I love having my house networked.

Wireless (802.11b) is nominally rated at 11Mbps, but the standard has an incredibly large amount of overhead with signal negotiation that the actual data throughput is nearer 8Mbps, but it does have the single advantage of the lack of cables strung out everywhere, which is a bit tidier. However, some folks thrill on the techno-chaos of a huge tangle of cat5 strung around the house... Like Robert (above) and myself

I think the best will always be wiring through the wals and having cat5 outlets in each bedroom :)

that is how my house is networked. Each room has an outlet and it all connects to a main hub in the attic that sends 1 cable down into my computer room that connects to my router.

or, you could become really rich, and have personal lines for each computer.

personal lines? you mean personal phone lines?

I am running cable (no phone lines needed).

If I were really rich, and I mean really really rich, I would have an oc-3 or faster coming to my house. Then again, I would have another house and a bunch more :)

I've got enough cat5 cables hooking up my computers already :). I have a couple of wireless APs so I can use my laptop on the sofa or anywhere. Right now I'm sitting on the sofa watching tv -- no wires at all.

Granted the speed isn't as good as wired, but if I need to really transfer something huge I just plug it into a cable at my desk. Wireless is great.
