View Full Version : Deciding on free subdomain

I'm trying to decide which of these would be the best free subdomain service:

- ipfox (http://www.ipfox.com)
- n2v (http://www.n2v.net)
- idz (http://www.idz.net)
- quickurl (http://www.quickurl.com)

or if you know of another which you consider to be better, please suggest it.

My main priorities are:

- no advertisements
- subdomain (you.nameofservice.com not nameofservice.com/you)
- URL cloaking
- path forwarding
- sub-subdomains (directory.you.nameofservice.com for host.com/directory)

although n2v's ban ip feature and idz's email forwarding are also appealing.

Could somebody who has experience with any of these please offer some opinions about them?

Thank you

I am the owner of QuickURL, We will soon also provide the email forwarding, and IP-BAN. Let's not forget we provide something no other services does, SUPER CLOAKING! If you ask anyone they will tell you its the best.

All redirection service, provide redirection using frames. I (QUICKURL) provide redireciton using frames & super cloaking. Super cloaking is a hidden redirection with pathforwarding, and with out frames, so it looks like real hosting. Feel free to give it a try

if anyone wants it, i'll include it in the free redirect script (http://www.redirector.wzr.net) i'm writing... have it done in two minutes.

IDz is cool. Last time I used it(when it was known as r4f).

That redirection service have been up for quite a while, quite stable I think...

They offer a whole lot of features, and sub-subdomains are easy to add.

quickurl, when are you going to offer ip-banning and email forwarding? it seems that every time i wait for a service to offer something that they say they will have soon, it turns out to be a really long time, they decide to not offer it for free, or just don't do anything about it.

i'd like to decide soon so that i won't have to tell everyone my url and new email and then have to tell them to use a different (subdomain) one again.

i'm not sure that i understand what you mean by super cloaking and the frames. do you mean that the url for "http://host.com/directory" would be like "http://you.redirector.com/directory"? how much of a bandwidth hog is supercloaking? would it be enough to really make a difference?

keith, would it be possible to use a redirect script if you are using a free webhost instead of your own server? how does it work and what would the subdomain be?

thanks

Although i'm not keith, I'm pretty sure the redirect script is not for that purpose. I still recommend idz, your URL will be short and easy to remember.

when i went to idz.net a couple of days ago, it seemed like all of the urls with the idz.net subdomain in the new members list at the bottom of the page didn't work and wouldn't load. is idz.net usually reliable?

also, the asterix by the email forwarding feature indicates that it's only available for idz.net accounts. does this mean that if i use a different subdomain (like r4f.com), i won't be able to use the email forwarding? it also says that email forwarding is offered for yourname@r4f.net and web based email is offered for yourname@r4f.com. do they also offer these services for other subdomains (like idz.net)?

thanks

The email account I can give you now, if you want. IP BAN will be coming up in about of week time or so.

EVERYTHING@yourname.3lx.com or whatever domain will be forwarded to your mail box :)

brian5,
sorry for the misleading info on the features page (a throw-back to when it used to be r4f). At the moment the only email service provided is you@idz.net forwarding. I used to have the service hosted with a company that allowed me to host several domains (and therefore automate the email registration process) - however they terminated my account because of my users misusing the service. Now, the extra domains I have are mainly directed by mydomain.com to idz.net's ip address. Anywho, if you sign up for one of the other domains I can manually set up email forwarding for you - just drop me an email.
As for the new users not working, it's usually the fact that their websites are hosted by veeeery slow free hosting companies, and not our service - honest! Try http://demo.idz.net to see how quick it is. ;)

Cheers,
Ben - iDz.net

Just get a domain host, its much better than any forwarding.

i don't really need a domain; i'm just getting a redirector because i plan to change hosts soon and in case i will again later. it's just to help me learn some webmastering and to keep in contact with some friends.

that you@you.3lx.com seems like it'd be pretty useful for promoting the site, but i don't think i'd need to attract so much attention to mine. :)

ben, are you planning to offer webmail with the subdomains? i don't really need one right now, but if you offer it i might just use that as it'd probably be more convenient for me. i'm more concerned about the email forwarding than the webmail.

so what you are saying is that you@idz.net is the only email forwarding option available right now, but you could manually make others (like you@hq3.com) available by request? would doing so cost anything more to you or be a hassle for you or the user? i don't absolutely need different one, but i'd like it if it's not too much trouble. :)

it's a 2 minute job... no trouble!
