Vb is the best paid (what this site is using), but Snitz (http://forum.snitz.com) is the best free one.
Edit: wait, you said remote hosting. http://ezboard.com is the best free one I know of, and it is customizable. Ads though :(. You won't find any remotely hosted boards without ads.

ya I agree ... the ezboard board (based on UBB6 I think) is prolly one of the best ... but ads are just way too agressive.
I would never use sush a board for my site , I prefer less customizable boards but with *normal* ads

Proboard is using YaBB which can also be found remotely hosted @ Sudden Launch (http://suddenlaunch.com) They have a banner and a pop-under.
Dk3 (http://dk3.com) has a banner on the bottom and pop-ups if that helps.
I think remotely hosted boards are great for super large forums. But if you just have a typical small forum, I'd grab a php board like phpbb2, openBB, or woltlab and stick it on an appropriate host.:D

I have a sudden launch board, sometimes you can't get to your board. Not very reliable if you ask me....
