View Full Version : Idea for new service

Since I am looking for free webspace, I got a lot info at this site and from the forum. Thanks.

To find a FWP which fits, means also to check by trial and error and the most important thing IMO is the downtime of a FWP. So I subscribed at one FWP, found that the server is too much down and subscribed the next FWP.

Wouldn't it be possible that freewebspace.net makes a testpage at every FWP and check if the site is up or down and make a summary? I do my checks with netwhistle, which checks for free every hour if the page is online. That's fine for me, but for statistics it should be shorter.

I would like to see an info like testpage at FWP created on. down time since that date is x hrs = %, downtime last month and downtime last 7 days. So you can see if the service is getting stable in the last time.

You can discuss if the testpage should be official or secret, because a FWP has the possibility to treat sites different.

Interesting idea, sounds good! Although, I'd imagine it would be pretty hard to do. :(

Really? It takes time to subscribe, but thats no "hard" work. Then you have to be a programmer to track the website and include the data in a database. A starting point could be http://www.arsdigita.com/free-tools/uptime.html

Well, it could be a question, how up-to-date the database is, but it would be ok for me if mentioned that the data are 2 days old and I know the data of the last month, so that I can make my own opinion.

I am not a programmer, but I think it would be easy for me to import the data of netwhistle in a spreadsheet with a macro, that makes a summary too. I am sure that can be done with a little(?) program much more better.

Not to ruin your idea or anything because it is a good one, but can you imagine the time of going to 1,000 or free web hosts and setting up pages?

Let's say 20 minutes a website

1,000 * 20
Ans / 60
Ans / 6

That's just over 55 working days (six hours), a fair bit of time. Now think of server costs, updates, uptime...

It's a lot of money, probaly a bit much for a website like FreeWebSpace.Net I highly doubt they have the money or time involved in the idea.

Maybe in the future, the near future...

OK. I do not have any idea how small or how big freewebspace.net is. Of course, they have to decide, what they want to do. I see that it is a lot of work, to register and upload the testpages, so another idea could be to test member sites of the forum. I don't know if someone has to be asked, if the downtime of his site can be tested, but that can be realized with a simple checkbox during registration.

IMO there is a big problem too, the legal stuff. When I do my private tests with netwhistle, I trust netwhistle, but what happens, when the tested FWP says the data are wrong, which freewebspace.net publishes. BTW about 2(?) days ago, I saw an error message in the netwhistle table and when I opened the log, there was none.

I'm sure in the future it will still be a brilliant idea, although it may be easier to impliment.

Although, I don't speak for everyone! :)

We will see what Peo has to say...
