You could have just asked your ISP, don't most dial-up services have static IPs anyway?

That's weird, my Dial-up came with a static IP at no extra charge and so did my DSL, I just thought it was a basic feature. Although I know a lot of people have dynamic I thought static IPs were more common

Static IPs aren't that commone because IPs are hard to come by these days.
My ISP doesn't even offer a static IP with their business DSL packages.

Wow I am lucky I guess, I would recommend that if you want residential DSL and want a Static IP see if http://directtvdsl.com is available for you. That is what I got

Hey, I'm happy with my ISP. I can live without a static IP. I mean, my speeds are 5 times faster than what it's supposed to be, and they haven't sent a bill for a couple of months, so I couldn't be happier.

I have $50 dollars riding that you do not have a static IP. I have a dynamic IP but it hasn't changed for 8 months now, even after leaving my modem off for hours.
Your ISP has tons of IPs and it can freely give u the same one (since your modem is use to having that).
You don't have a static IP.

thanks for clearing that up... well its static for now
there are good things and bad things about having a static, and nothing really good about it unless you run a server /or/ dont want to have to remember your ip all the time

Each IP sort of gets attached to a specific modem, and each modem sort of gets attached to a specific nic card. So when you turn your modem on, the DHCP server sees that your modem had the IP of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and says "well since it's free, let me give it to you".

Disadvantage of static IP: If you get IP banned, you can't go back to that place because your IP won't change :D
