if i buy a computer with XP Home, can i upgrade it to xp Pro?
would this get rid of the awful stuff in home? or would a clean install be better?

http://microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/matrix.asp shows you all the os that is able to upgrade.
Windows XP Home can upgrade to XP Pro, but XP Pro cannot "upgrade" to XP Home.

Well if you buy a computer apart from Drivers and Windows there will not be other software. So format your HDD and install XP Pro.

I would actually reccomend XP home unless you need all the extra components or have a slow computer.
