View Full Version : What I really want...

HostSpot.com lists a lot of places I could get my website
hosted cheap.
All I am really looking for is:
* What Yahoo Groups or MSN Communities can give me
* With my own domain name
* Without the ads
 Very few of the web hosting places show sample
websites that demonstrate what their portal software can do
 So I cannot compare what the message boards might look like
 I really don't need cold fusion or the ability to do my own ASP or Java applications.
 Or most of the things they are offering
 In fact, I want to keep it SIMPLE. USABLE. Maintainable. Nobody is getting paid for this, and I just want it to always work.
:) Does anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks

Well I think any host can do that so I think you should tell us how much you want to spend, and how much web space you want etc...
And what do you mean by "I can't see what the boards look like" When you have a real site, you install the boards yourself and you make them look however you want. So that part is up to you.

Any paid host can give you that, just don't go for an unlimited host.

Actually you should just go with a host that offer Mysql and php4 and set up phpNuke or Wbb yourself. Its rather easy to do and after you set it up, everything is a snap, look at bruce's site for an example. Alot of hosts don't come with official portal software, but you cdan always install your own.

Yeah and if you do, do that WBB is by far the easiest forum I have ever installed, or I guess I should say it was the first one I installed that I did not have to tamper with before it worked right, except I had to put trailing slashes on my paths for some reason, or esle it would say they are invalid, even though it said do not...STRANGE

I'd go with phpnuke at first and then switch to something better later.

Yeah I just found out for sure that with Myacen.com you can install a forum from the CP just by typing in the folder you want it in. It installs XMB automatically

I'd rather them install phpbb2 instantly.

Time to take the plunge, sign up somewhere for a month
and find out if I like the service.
Thanks, everybody, for all your help, information,
and recommendations.
