When my old hard disk fried, the new one I bought was a Maxtor 7200 RPM 40GB drive. I haven't really noticed that much of a difference, but it is quick.

yeah, 7200 is better.. the faster the better. I went up from 5400rpm Western Digital 13GB, to a 7200rpm Maxtor 30GB. i've been pleased with the speed gain so far..

7200 rpm is heaps faster and has less latency,so its faster and more instantaneous.rpm is definitely rotations per minute.if u dont see a difference between the two it is most likely due to the hdd controllers on the motherboard.
cheers

Do they even make 30GB hard drives that are 5400 RPM? I know when I was buying a computer a few months ago that none of the major computer vendors (Dell, Gateway, etc.) had a 5400 hard drive larger than 20 GB or so. I'd just spring for a 7200, as most of the time, the difference in price between the 7200 and 5400 at the same size isn't that great, but it's well worth it.

ZDNet conducted a test on both and found little difference. However, since 7200 and 5400rpm costs about the same, I would go for 7200rpm anyways. There are, however, chances of 7200rpm Hard Drives frying up in your computer if the fan it not strong enough.

I have a maxtor 7200rpm 30 gig cost me 140. The main thing to look for is ata66. Get the 80 wire cable and hope your mobo can do it. I have noticed a lot of proformance boost from it
