1. Color scheme is fine.
2. I think it should go down all the way. Maybe not, maybe if i had seen a example.
3. Yes, way to plain. I think something light.

1. is the color scheme good

Yes.

2. should the side bar go all the way down the page?

Yes. BTW, you should fix it for higher resolutions.

3. i think it needs a background. do you? if so what sort of style?

Something.... a soft blue background might work. But then again do some testing.

http://www.glomar.net/screen.jpg is how it looks at my resolution. Kinda funny.

Yeah i just did it in 800x600 for now.

What do you think the ratio of 800x600 people to 1024x768 people is?

It might be a good idea to just do it big.

Do it big. Now I am in 1280X1024 resolution after following some advice here and it doesn't look good. Make it big.

The screenshot is up now.

Is there supposed to be a menu in that sidebar? I don't see it.

Anyway. The colors are fine. No, I wouldn't make the sidebar go all the way down. Perhaps accent it somehow with maybe a thin, light vertical bar dropping down going to the bottom of the page, but leave the main sidebar as it is. A background? Hmm... it needs something more but backgrounds are always risky. Put something together and see how it works out, but keep your options open. Another comment, it doesn't scale well. I wouldn't just "do it big", though, I'd make the header image on top expandable so it will fill the page at low and high resolutions.

Make it big? That's even worse than making it small. Make it fit all.

Colors are fine. Your menu doesn't show up either in Opera or Moz though. No links at all.

What browser are you using, Dusty? Do you have JavaScript enabled?

How would I go about making the header image expandable?

also I have a feeling I could be going abou the construction of this layout in a different way- I made the image, saved it and then, using dreamweaver, made a text area.

would it be better to slice it up in sections?

i need a little help in this area:confused2

The only things that need to be images are the logo (?) in the top left corner and the shadow. The rest is plain color.

Either use a # color where you can instead of graphics or use a slice of the graphic as a bg image and let it tile.

thats the problem i dont know how to do any of that (html stuff)

i can make the shadow fine, but putting in on the page in the right spot is something else entirely.

Mozilla 1.0RC1 and yes, JavaScript is enabled.

I see, it's all a background. Interesting but difficult way to go about it, I'd suggestion going the more conventional route of sliced images and tables.

I think it is because of a retarded browser sniffer.

Is there going to be a hier manu later on? If it isn't, there is no reason to use js at all for the menu that is there now, and especially not a hier menu script.

Gayowulf

Yes, there will be hiermenues later on.

How would one go about the tables and slicing routine?

meow

Well, hard to tell you if you don't do HTML. :confused2
Basically you cut out the pieces shown here (http://w1.181.telia.com/~u18109800/other/gayo.gif). The rest you don't need.

Build a 2*2 cells table. Place the logo image in the top left cell and make it the width and height of the image. Then you use the two thin slices as backgrounds in the top right and left bottom cells. Set the table width to 90% or whatever. No padding or spacing.

Thanks meow, I'll do my best and post up the results

Holler if you need help with the table. What do you use btw, DreamWeaver?

Gayowulf
April 29th, 2002, 01:31
Yeah and i touch it up by hand where dreamweaver is too retarded to do it right.

I guessed because of all the layers and z-indexes that aren't needed... :p
It's funny, they all have their "fingerprints".

Gayowulf
April 30th, 2002, 02:13
yeah, good point. at least i got somewhere.

would you be able to offer some help?

meow

I've better since I just realized that I fooled you about the amount of cells you needed. :o

Hang in there a moment.

Here you go (http://w1.181.telia.com/~u18109800/other/gayo/gayo.html). Old hackish style. :D

In the top row and left column the background will start to repeat itself if you stuff too much in. Keep to the width and height of the logo and you're fine. This can be tweaked but I thought you wanted simple. ;)

In the "content cell" you can stuff as much as you want. If you want more padding you have to use CSS or put an extra table in there.

Change the CSS bit in head to get the page margins you want. You don't have to use pixels. % is fine (not for the NS bit though).

Yes, it seems to. I haven't done much with it yet.

It is probable that i will be back here with more questions
