Apparently, Symantec (who makes Norton AntiVirus) owns patents for it's virus-defintion updates program, and is informing all their competitors of this.

This is ridiculous. Norton hardly was the first program to feature software updates, and I don't care what they say, "virus definitions" are a *part* of the software. Downloading a bunch of virus definitions without Norton won't do you any good, and running Norton without any definitions at all won't do you any good either.

I hope other companies find a way to get around this.

and you know have to buy a live update subscription to download the updated virus definitions too!
