View Full Version : What kind of specs do the Tera-Byte RaQ's have?

I'm currently in the process of building my own server and have ordered a dedicated 1.5/768 connection. I was just curious and wanted to know what the specs are for the Tera-Byte Cobalt RaQ's?

I'd like to know what type of CPU, memory, hard disk, etc they use. I'd like to emulate those specs and improve on them since all the sites I currently run are on their RaQ's and they run and perform beautifully!

Thanks guys! :D

Um.. well if you must know... http://www.cobalt.com

The Cobalt RaQ4i runs on a 450 MHz AMD processor with IDE hd's and the machines are pretty much customized by Cobalt themselves. I really wouldn't suggest modleing your server around there products.

As was said, hardware wise they don't use anything overly special (nor current for that matter). AMD K6/2- 300 or 450 MHz processors, 5,400 IDE hard drive(s), PC100 SDRAM, etc.

Wow, cool! I had planned on building a AMD Athlon 1Ghz, 512MB, SCSI hard drive, etc and spending almost a thousand dollars on other miscellaneous parts.

I guess my standards are set way higher than that and maybe overkill. :) If my site is running beautifully on that setup on the RaQ, I should probably lower my standards and save some money.

For the Linux guys, you know that Apache will even run on a 486, so I should be able to run one or two sites of a 500MHz setup too. Hell, rackshack is selling dedicated servers for $99 a month and they run on 1GHz Celeron's. (Looks like they don't have that plan anymore and are selling PIII servers now for $119 a month).

You were correct Chicken. I had e-mailed my host about the RaQ before you had responded. They told me this:

Cobalt RaQ4's are K6 400 (350-450)

We put 512MB of ram in and 20GB hard drives in most of the raqs.

So yeah, I better tone down my setup lol... :)

Tera-byte has more than what most pages need.

Yeah, I own one and have leased them before. Far as I know, the 4's have a 450 MHz processor (not 400). Not sure what they mean by that. 512MB (two slots, 256MB each slot) is the maximum RAM you can put in them (one of their limitations).

You can actually stick 1gb of ram in a cobalt RAQ4 i found that Ghoulnet were using 1gb of ram and searched the sun forums and there it was clear as day a way to stick 1gb ram in them.

Maybe the limitation was from when they didn't make sticks larger than 256 ( ???heh), though you could probably stick in 30GB of ram, not sure it would recognize it or not. I've not tried, nor will ever try this however, so if you say it is possible, that's good enough for me... :D
