TWO people were being questioned by police late last night after a six-hour siege at Gagebrook ended with a house set alight and three people taken to hospital with knife wounds.
Police were called to the Sattler St home about 4am yesterday. They said a man held nine occupants, mostly young adults, at knifepoint.
Inspector Peter Edwards, in charge of Bridgewater station, said a special operations group had surrounded the site and negotiators spoke with the man.
"There were a number of people contained in the house and restrained from leaving. He was armed with a knife but we could not be sure if he had other weapons," Insp Edwards said.
"We are relieved the situation ended with success and the suspect detained."
He said a domestic-related disturbance was believed to be the cause.
When police arrived one young woman was allowed to leave the house, and she told police about the situation.
Soon after, two other females left the house.
"While this happened, a group of about five young males escaped by a rear entrance," Insp Edwards said.
After another young male left, smoke began coming from the house and the alleged offender gave himself up, leaving with the last of the male hostages about 8.30am.
Insp Edwards said three people were taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital with superficial knife wounds and soft-tissue damage, but were in a stable condition.
Bridgewater and Glenorchy units of the Tasmania Fire Service quickly brought the fire under control.
Fire damage, mostly to the roof and lounge areas, was severe and was estimated at $40,000.
Eyewitnesses said the disturbance began about 2am.
A young woman said she arrived at the scene after 3am and the man had chased her and her friends, who called police.
The guy who owns the house is 17.
I kno him.
They 'young adults' were having a lan party
$40,000 of stuff was burnt down to the ground
Computers, CDS, Software...
Nothing was insured.
Wouldnt you be pissed?
