I'd look into a Dell Inspiron or a Toshiba Notebook.

You could get a very decent laptop for that price.

The Vaio's in my experience have not bee very good, the built in devices including the modem, sound card, and ethernet were not recognized by windows XP and I could not find a place to download them at there website, they also did not work with 2000 or any other OS.

Http://www.tigerdirect.com has good deals on dell lap tops, but the toshiba's in my opinion are great, so are the new alienware, but your options are pretty open with $1600

I would have to disagree. My dad's Sony Vaio recognized everything when he installed Windows 2000 and the performance is some of the best I have ever seen out of a laptop.

Just remembered Toshiba is doing a special promo in the US these days. Saw an ad for it on News.com. I think they are giving a DC or $100 off or something like that.

Well before I go reccoemend actual lap tops I want to know what you want on your system first. I mean now that you have some idea's what are you looking towards?

So basically you want something to play with, but will get the job done when you need it to. I am assuming you will be writing papers and stuff with some word processor. Well pretty much any lap top can do that. So I am kind of at a loss on what to reccomend. but that dell was nice, or look for a toshiba.., Like this one http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/pc/pc_prodDetail.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0030279069.1021491947@@@@&BV_EngineID=fadcedceiggkbfekcghcfmfdglj.0&comm=ST&plin=Portables&pfam=Satellite&poid=209628&Adoid=184501
I looked at the alienware site but it is impossible to configure a laptop under $2000 that is pretty sad

That statement could not be more wrong! Toshiba makes high quality lap tops some of the best. Acer is not special, all manufacturers now make laptops with p4 chips

Gateway also makes good laptops if you want to look into that, I must say they have the best support
Is0lized people are not gonna give you specific answers until you give us specific specs on what you want

i havent had a good experience with a gateway or dell (i got annoyed switching the cd and floppy b/c it didnt have a built in floppy - it has 2 bays (or whatever) and the battery went in 1 and u have a choice of a floppy or cd in the other... its annoying to keep switching...)

im on a toshiba satellite laptop right now and its prefect for me... everything is built in... the price was cheap (around a $1200 at bestbuy)... mine has: celeron 1ghz, 256mb (gonna upgrade to 512mb), 20gb h/d, dvd, win xp pro, network card, a video output (so i can watch dvds on a tv or something...) and some other junk...

lol - the teachers in my school got acer laptops from the board of ed. and they're 1.3ghz (celeron or p3 - not sure) and one of my teachers says it pretty good... and my gym teacher got one too and he uses it to play games on it and he let me use it once on a field trip and it was good... it didnt crash and it was kinda fast... but mine's faster b/c i got more ram then theirs =P

i dont have any experience with sony laptops but im tryin to get me a laptop thats: p4 2.4 ghz, 1gb ram (or 2gb if it supports it), 40/60/80gb h/d, dvd&cdrw combo, and other junk... its gonna be the best laptop ever =)

Is0lized people are not gonna give you specific answers until you give us specific specs on what you want but acer isn't using the mobile p4 chip.

Try to get one that has dedicated video RAM. Anything that is onboard really hinders the potential of the machine. I.e: HP laptops are great, but their DVD is less than great (aka HORRIBLE) 'cause of the restricted 8MB onboard/shared memory of the 256MB onboard Ram.

Check out fujistu. They're supposed to be good too.

BTW, I've had experience with an Acer laptop and it was really cool... Toshiba is pretty good as well..

i can get one now if i had the money... i can custom build one - like at http://63.126.60.205/jstore/jetbookstore.asp?cust_ID=4266100 (Jetbook 7850 or Jetbook 7800)

i had another site where u can custum build a laptop but i forgot the link... ill find it later...

is0lized - look here http://www.ubid.com/cat/get_cat_page.asp?CatID=1001 or on ebay... but remember to check the condition because some are new and some are refurbished (dunno if you want those)...

on ubid, bid on the ones that have the "u" logo because those are the ubid auctions and those are safer than the other auctions there...

i think you should look at the 1GHz and Above (http://www.ubid.com/cat/get_cat_page.asp?CatID=3006&PgNum=1) so you'll have kinda the lastest thing, but also look at the 733-950MHz (http://www.ubid.com/cat/get_cat_page.asp?CatID=3007&PgNum=1) ones too... dont go too lower b/c itll be an older system and you might not like it (i know i wouldnt)
