Bomb teams prepare to remove dynamite in Lakewood
February 14, 2001, 08:15 AM

LAKEWOOD – Evacuation was completed early Wednesday morning of a 0.25-mile radius zone where six cases of unstable dynamite were discovered Tuesday in a shed next to Interstate 5 near the Tacoma Mall.

A 1.5-mile section of I-5 began closing at 8:30 a.m. (delayed from 8 a.m.) and once the area is entirely clear, a specially designed robot will be sent in to diagnose and remove the dynamite. However, a bomb squad member will be at risk when he disassembles the door of the storage facility.

There are about six cases of old, aging dynamite, which is considered the most dangerous kind, and possibly leaking nitroglycerin, a highly unstable explosive liquid.

Crews have dug a disposal ditch outside the storage locker where the dynamite will be set on fire. Dynamite on fire is much safer than if it is leaking in a storage facility where it could possibly explode.

The procedure could take as long as 16 hours.

The amount of dynamite would be enough to cause a blast half as large as the one that brought down the Oklahoma City Federal Building in 1997, Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

"We don't want people to panic, but then again, we don't want them to be around just in case something goes wrong or something explodes," he said.

Interstate 5 from 74th Street from the north, and State Route 512 to the south will be shut down.

So what will commuters do?

For those going south on Interstate 5, you will exit at 74th Street, come down South Tacoma Way, and get back on Interstate 5 at State Route 512.

Those going northbound will exit at 512. Commuters going to downtown Tacoma will be detoured up Pacific Avenue, and those heading to Seattle will have to stay on 512, and take 167 north.

Also found in the shed were materials for making methamphetamine, Troyer said.
