View Full Version : Good host for band site? I need MP3 support!

Episode 1

I am looking for a paid host with adequate space of course, (I can look into specs on my own later based on the recommendations I get here). But there are a couple of other things that I'm looking for that are important.

1. ASP and database support, (Access is fine).

2. The ability to put up MP3's. (very important).

I want to start a web site for my band and it would be worthless if I couldn't put some MP3's on our site.

Or is it possible I could hide MP3 files in a ZIP file? will the host administrators catch that?

Well, I guess I was Aiming for at least 100MB in space and probably something like 4GB in transfer. But like I said, i haven't narrowed it down, because I'm having a difficult time trying to find any place that accepts MP3's.

22host - how does one prove that it's our own music? Just curious because I heard of a couple cases were a site gets dropped just because there is a file with a .mp3 extension.

Thanks

Yeah, I guess that is the catch. I have a job working with databases and ASP and thought maybe I could do a little testing on the side. But I suppose I could get a free site for that stuff.

So perhaps I should just make my main requirement MP3's:D

Ha Ha I FORGOT I was hosting with Alwayswebhosting.com (http://www.alwayswebhosting.com) ! I'm pretty happy with them so far. Set up was a breeze. I didn't go through their panels or anything. Realaudio literally FLIES off their servers!

Also, I'm hosting some mp3's on Geocities (http://www.geocities.com) and I haven't had a complaint yet. :D

Really? I had some on an old Tripod site and they deleted my account out of the blue. Not even a warning message to take them down! Thats what made me mad. After I thought about it for a mintue, i realized it must have been the MP3's because we didnt have anything else illegal on our site. but anyway, no more free hosts for me.

Just letting you know in case your Geocities site disappears one day:eek:

My Geocities site is far from free! I have a premium (paid) site. So maybe that's why they don't bother me. :D

EVERY host should allow mp3s it is just a file as long as they are not illegal and since you are in a band they won't be. SO you have no need to worry about that, the catch is the ASP

Unfortunately, since the majority of uploaded mp3s aren't legal, it does make it more difficult for legit bands to find space.

Most bands usually sign contracts with hosts promising to display copyright information showing that those songs belong to them.

I have been with over 7 hosts now, and have had close friends that have been with probably 50 hosts, and every single one has not had a problem uploading mp3s even on Don Host I had no problems as long as you tell them it is your own work. There was never a contract.

Yep, that is the problem.

While I was shopping for a site that can host MP3's, the first place I look at is the Policies and Terms of Service. If they mention MP3 anywhere as being unacceptable or illegal, I leave.

Why not Myacen.com then? I mean I host with them and I am a musician in a couple bands here is there tos

hit ctrl+f and search for mp3 you won't find anything. and Since you now know somebody that does it without a problem you've got nothing to worry about. Not to mention they have a really good reputation, there prices are good and they have great support!
That is if you can live without the ASP

Well it is natural for a host to be down a little bit...

Yeah I noticed it too, it was the first time my host has been down since I have had it though and that is a month as of today. so 30minutes out of 30 days is pretty good
