They were loosing too much money i guess from the banner cheats. Cheat a service and it either gives up and goes onto something new or starts doing paid services only.
The reason why they prolly started as free was to establish themselves in the domain market. Now they have a name for themselves they have gone and put a fee on the service.

I just paid a visit to Namezero's page... it seems like they've really stopped the free domain thing. Just a few days ago (or it could've been weeks already, time really flies by) they still have the fee domain options on their page. I guess they've finally figured that what they were doing was wrong (in a way).

There were probably way too many abusers hacking the banners. And if people didn't hack them, they probably used the domain for secondary purposes that made the domain not get many hits. This way, Namezero couldn't get enough cash because the domains that weren't hacked got next to no visitors. How can an ad-frame that pays 10 cents a click with about 3 visitors are month that don't click on them generate enough revenue for a $35 domain?

Bad business, IMO. You don't really gain much from giving out free domains, even if you do it the Namezero way. See how they've stopped their services too? And look at how all the other so-called free domain services have "died out" too...
In a nutshell, I don't think it's worth the trouble. But if you really start giving out free domains, there will be lots of happy people out there. One thing you can't prevent though... abusers. A lot of companies shut down because of them.

That's what I'm waiting to do also, but... Namezero might just get greedy and keep your domain. That's the thing that scares me most. I mean, what if they just decided to sell your domain? I am currently waiting for a namedemo site to drop out within less than a year now. I am wondering though. Will the site be dropped on it's marked expiration date, or am I preparing for a much longer wait after the expiration and doomed for eternity? If anybody has had their namedemo site expire at all please tell me how they work things out. Do they keep it for themselves after expiration or does the site actually get "dropped". This information will save me lots of worries 'cause I don't know too much on how these free domain registrations crap works. They should be avoided at all cost I think. Unless you plan to have just a stupid little crap site. That ain't the case for me though.

I could.... registering a domain for 30$ today and then selling them for an average of, lets just say 75$, Namezero would be in the money pool. Few years down the road, there wont be any more half-decent .coms, .nets, or even .orgs. They could sell for big buck$ :D Good plan.

March 16th, 2001, 23:37
How you give them away? Well, theyare not domains, so they don't have to be registered. Simple DNS entries usually will do it, though depends on how it is set up on the server (where the files will be/are).
ace0
March 16th, 2001, 23:38
how would I find out?
Chicken
March 17th, 2001, 00:16
Well, there's not one way to do this. Typically place that give out large numbers of subdomains (something like F2S), use a script that includes a sign up form, and sets up the structure on the server, etc.
I don't really know what you are trying to do exactly.
For smaller amounts of subdomains, you can use a service like mydomain.com which will allow you to set up subdomains, and forward them to various places. I believe you can forward subs to paths even, but I'm not certain.
Methods include having a wild card on the domain and setting it up so that anything.domain.com gets forwarded to the server (where you can set up subdomains there), or to a single site, which has a script that redirects based on the exact name (bill.domain.com goes here, bob.domain.com goes there).
Etc..............

Don't think so. From what I've gathered, they'll re-register your domain for you for free if they think your site qualifies. If not, they'll prolly make you pay the "special limited price of $24.95, a 30% saving!" or your domain's gone.

well, I meant if you don't get enough visitors. What do you mean gone? Like, sell it, right?

One thing I know for sure is that you won't get the domain fowarded to your site anymore and you won't have access to the control panel, etc.
My guess is they will try to auction the domain if it's good enough.

If I stop after a year, do they still keep it?

guess they would keep the domain... so they are sure you got to buy it from them, if you ever want to get it back...
also i think that they sometimes even register com, net and org, if you just register one of that!
So they earn something!

Yes, they registered the .org and .net versions of my .com.
I think that thru NameZero Plus you only get the .com back unless you pay more. I'll find out later this week when it goes thru the registrar (whoever it is).
